I don't know if it was meant to be a proposal or not, but whilst we were walking down some street, he said 'Well, will you?' and I said yes.  Class!

Midnight, it's not silly at all. I totally understand the need and want for romance to make you feel special. I'm lucky mine actually pulls through from time to time and does something truly romantic.

I had to ask him.. Ugh.   So, I wont get a romantic proposal and like Midnight, I wont get an engagment ring either.  I can lie to myself and say I dont care, but I kinda would like one.  Although, in the grand scheme of things and the big picture of life, I realize an empty finger is ok as long as I am with the person I love.  Rings just make it hard to wear gloves, I keep telling myself :)

Carey- does he know you really want a ring (I assume so...)? Of course, you could always do the ol' leave a magazine pic of the ring you like in his pocket trick (he'll be here soon so you could do that!) Of course, I'm actually so old-fashioned/traditional (whatever you want to call it) I want to be surprised and I don't want to help pick out the ring. It would be more special if he does it himself! I'm not picky about rings anyway (as long as it's not plastic or over the top ostentatious then I"m fine!)...

Of course, first things first.. need  a boy first! lol

He knows I want one, but I SAY that I dont, so you can't really blame him for not knowing what to do :)
Honestly, if he spent a lot on it, I would just feel guilty and (I know I'm a horrible person for saying this), but if its a cheapie thing, then its not really that fun, so maybe I dont deserve one!!  I went online to design my "dream" ring and just got really stressed out looking at the prices of them.  The one I made was like $2200 and that seems crazy for a ring eventhough I know a lot of people pay more, but geez.
He mentioned once that we would go shopping for one when I am there in May, but my guilt will probably make me talk him out of it.

I didn't get a proper proposal from my ex-husband (or a proper marriage for that matter :-\\\\), and I didn't get a regular engagement ring, only a wedding band, which was fine as I'm not a big jewerly person. I did find a wonderful antique ring a few years ago and had a diamond fitted into it that had fallen out of an old necklace. It's really beautiful and I wear it on my right hand. I figure if I ever get married again, I'll just move it over to my left hand, as it's actually 'my perfect ring'. If I never get married again, I'll give it to one of my daughters to keep.
We are a nation that has a government -- not the other way around. And this makes us special among the nations of the earth. Our government has no power except that granted to it by the people. It is time to check and reverse the growth of government, which shows signs of having grown beyond the consent of the governed.

mirrajay, what about an antique ring? You can find some great rings in antique shops that are unique and inexpensive. Then you can get a special ring without the guilt!

Oh, don't let yourself feel guitly about that!! Every girld deserves their ring. Especially if you really want one. There is NO reason to say that you don't think you deserve one! They don't have to be $2200. I don't know how much mine was, but I KNOW it's not that much. Plus, big jewelry stores mark things up a ton. I'm sure if I designed my ring it would have easily been that much, but DH picked out my ring and I love it. I've heard of a lot of people going to antique shops (or even pawn shops, but you can just call that an antique shop too :) ) to get rings. I think that's a pretty cool idea actually. You get something more individual with a little bit of history.

Ahh... good thinking girls.  Hey, pkmac, any good antique shops in Surrey that you know of? Mr. Fiance lives in Bagshot, so perhaps I could organize a little stroll by one of the shops... just coincidentally, you know! :)

None near me, but I'm sure there are tons in the surrounding areas.

Oh crap.  I just did a little search of "antique rings" and found this site that has art deco rings and I THINK I just found my dream ring.  The mounting alone is 600 pounds (no center diamond included).
I love you, ring, but shall never have you.  Maybe I'll print it out and just glue the picture to my finger!

To the antique shop it is!!

Seriously never? If a ring is important to you, maybe you can aim for getting the one you want for an anniversary.

Or you could do what I always did when I was a kid... "I really really want _______. Can I have it as my Christmas AND birthday present AND Christmas present again???" :)

Honestly, I'd perfer a visa over a ring.  We'll bother with the ring after all the visa expenses are sorted.  Anniversary ring sounds good to me. There is that 18 pound one at M&S that I could flash around until then!  ;D
