Your Fears & Phobia's
« on: February 11, 2009, 11:41:59 PM »
So I am sat here tonight with a hotwater bottle on my cheek and a packet of painkillers.  I have really severe toothache and I have had it for days.  I need to get booked in with the dentist, but I have a huge phobia.  Which is completely irrational I know...but the thought of the sound of the drill and a dentist poking around a already extremely painful tooth is making me really anxious and feeling very sick at the thought  :(  but enough is enough..I must go...  I have no clue where this fear has come from..

So my question is....What are your fears and phobia's?? and where do you think it stems from??

Speaking in public. Being stared at. Rituals. Not blowing something important in public. I'm getting married on Saturday and I'm surprised I haven't started the morning upchucks yet. In fact, I'm a lot calmer than I should be...which doesn't mean I won't be a wreck on The Day. I've been dreading this all my life.

It started when I blew my lines in a school play at 15, but both of my parents had crippling stage fright (my father fought through his and became an after-dinner speaker later in life). So the fright might have preceded the error.

I am terribly afraid of thunder for no reason at all... and, I panic if my circulation is cut off even for a second (which makes blood pressure readings a horrible experience!)

My theory is unexplained fears come from past live experience, but I am sure others have more scientific explanations.

Congrats on your wedding, Stoatula!  You will do fine :)

I am afraid of me or my kids getting a serious illness. It stems, I think, from my mom being a hypochondriac (which stemmed from her mom dying at 30 -- my mom was 5 -- from pancreatic cancer).

I am currently anxious about my house... not sure homeownership is for someone with anxiety issues like mine. I'm just afraid of every little issue I see, that its going to turn into a money pit and we'll be financially ruined. How about that for drama queen-ness? I know its irrational but I'm finding it really hard to kick.

I am scared of ventriloquist dummies (like Howdy Doody).  There is something about the way their jaw moves.  My family have all learned how to do the that detached jaw motion just to make me feel uncomfortable.  I think it was because when I was little I watched some rerun, b&w, western show (Wild, Wild West?) where there was an evil, autonomous ventriloquist dummy.  Fortunately, dummies do not to be a regular occurence in everyday life so I have learned to manage despite this crippling, life-altering phobia.  :)

Lucky can confirm this one....SPIDERS...I pretty much think the world would be a great place...if they all suddenly burst into flames...

I have no fear of heights..but I do fear the falling sensation when jumoing from heights. Being that I am a qualified military para...my career path was a "living" nightmare at times...

There was a thread about this sometime last year:

http://talk.uk-yankee.com/index.php?topic=43199

which pretty much confirmed that everyone at UKY is scared of the same three things.  ;D  Or maybe we're just fueling each others' fears....

My phobias are moths, and travelling over bridges (especially by car) and grates.  I'll do just about anything to avoid the latter.

Moths and Butterflies.  It's not just a fear though, it's a full blown terror inducing phobia.

As for fears, I don't like most flying insects and I really don't like walking up staircases that have gaps you can see through between the steps.

I'm afraid of slugs and I won't touch them, even with the help of a tissue, shovel or anything of the kind.  When I was a little girl, I watched the neighbor boy put a stake through a slug and it made the nastiest noise...I just can't go near them now.

LuckyCuz: Have a search for a dentist that works with phobic patients. There are some that specialise in it and have different methods (instead of just jumping in full-steam ahead, I guess). One of my friends back home has a crippling fear of dentists, but was ok when she went to this sort of specialist.

My fear is simple: fire. Scares me more than anything. I can't use matches or lighters (though I've found a few types of lighters that I can sorta use). I've had recurring nightmares about fire since I was a small child.

I've always had a fear of trains. And I've almost always ended up living near train tracks. And I've moved at least 12 times.

The train tracks here kind of divide the campus. I have to drive across them to park, then walk across the tracks to get to class, then walk back across to get to my car, then drive across them to get home again.  Thus forcing me to get over my fear some. People try to beat the train all the time, and I think my heart stops a little every time I see someone being stupid and trying to race the train.

When  I was a toddler, my family lived just a few feet away from the tracks. I would run crying to whatever adult was nearest and jump in their arms whenever a train would come by. I still jump a little whenever I hear one coming.

Lobsters.

When my parents were living in Maine, a dinner guest requested lobster, and proceeded to chase me around the house with the live critter. I was about 3 at the time.

Also centipedes and millipedes. We had house centipedes one place we lived...they can shed legs, like lizards can shed their tails, to get away from predators. And the legs keep walking even after you kill them. *twitch*

I get pretty anxious about being next to lorries in a car, but that stems from the time I was hit by one. (No physical damage, but it was pretty traumatic!)

And here I thought I didn't have many phobias. But you must admit, they're not the usual ones! ;D

Driving with a propane tank in the car.  My dad always seems to run out of propane for the BBQ just before a party and sends someone out to get it refilled.  I absolutely refuse to do it.

I can rationally step back and think, what a stupid fear.  I mean...I am driving a car with a massive petrol tank.  What's the difference between that and a 5-gallon propane tank?   But it reduces me to tears.
