Where to buy a nice sofa from?
« on: February 13, 2009, 11:17:17 PM »
Well, we have a sofa we like at DFS, but then I've read all over the internet how crappy they are. Are they really, or is it just sour grapes? Where can we buy a nice sofa from that won't fall apart??

Heyas!

We bought from DFS about 5 years ago. 2 words for us, Extremely Happy.

When theres large companies, theres always an 'element' of sour grapes involved by those who have had a bad experience. No company is perfect, so it stands to reason that the very large companies will have a pretty large customer base and of those a vocal lot to complain.

Just look at all the same 'types' of people who say 'oh I'll never set foot in PC world' or 'I hate microsoft' or 'can't stand Vodafone' or whoever.

Look at your pocket, look at the deals DFS offer, see if theres a sofa you like and purchase. If DFS were really 'crap' they'd be out of business by now. Look past all their 'last few days sale remaining' promos and you should find a good set you like.

I've had no problems with build quality for the 4 sofas and footstool we bought - they've lasted very well indeed, im due just another leather conditioner and clean session but thats it..  stitching etc is all fine, nothing has broken or come apart. I guess not havin little sprogs jumping all over them has helped to an extent too!

Thumbs up from me - a satisfied customer and indeed, looking to purchase 2 more footstools in the near future from them too!

Cheers! DtM! West London & Slough UK!

My mum's is from DFS.  It took a few goes for them to send the right one, but once they did, she was delighted.  Very comfy, and hardwearing.

I second sofa workshop. I love their sofas... and you get a seemingly infinite choice of fabrics.

I have DFS Sofas and I love them, not crappy at all! Very good quality and they are really attractive!  Sofa Workshop is going out of business (from what I can tell from our local one which is closed and has a handwritten sign in the window saying "we are closed" I would not buy one from them right now.) We bought 2 DFS Sofas and no problems, came right exactly when they said they would, hard wearing, stain treated, and imo they were the exact thing that we wanted.

I'm another DFS fan.  Took 11 weeks to deliver, but the quality is great.

My husband bought furniture from Next right before we met.  It lasted hmm, maybe three or four years.  Pure CRAP!!!  We still have the table and chairs, also crap :-\\\\

I have trouble picturing how a sofa can only last a few years (not that I don't believe it won't).  How exactly does a poor quality sofa deteriorate?

I'm wondering because mine is considered near the the 'bottom of the line' but two years in and I've not noticed any major issues.  It just seems more comfy to me  :)

My fiance bought his from DFS. It's the nicest sofa I've ever seen! I didn't think I'd like it based on it's description of leather and fabric together but oh it's so nice! He bought one that's simular to The Hemmingway shown but much nicer fabric and leather and throw pillows. He got his on sale too! A must to check out!

One way in which my old one in the US deteriorated was not to do with the construction but with the quality of the seat cushions -- they went too squishy. They always were that style anyway so it was more my error in judgement --next time I will buy a sofa with a more structured inner pad to the seats. These ones went saggy because they were just the kapok filled kind. I constantly had to go inside them and ruffle up the stuffing to get them to be comfortable. I think that's one issue in which buying a cheap or bad quality sofa will start to show it's poor quality over time -- seat cushions starting to become uncomfortable and unsupportive, even while the construction of the frame is holding up just fine.

From my experience with Sofas, you always have to plump the cushions on a regular basis, otherwise you get bum impressions.

I had an Ikea Sofa and it lasted for 8 years, not bad imo for a cheap sofa.

How much are you willing to spend, do you like leather?

We're getting an arm chair  made from here, it's this one in fact :

I also liked :

you choose your leather and edging etc.

We have a tiny flat but will get the sofa once we move, as everything is gorgeous and the leather is butter soft :)

I'd like an Ikea sofa; I think they make pretty good products at reasonable prices.

My cushions didn't just need plumping -- they were a nightmare! They were not structured, just big sacks of kapok really; I know now that the ones which stay relatively firm are more the type with a solid block of high quality foam coupled with other stuffing, maybe kapok too, but just put together with more solidity so that even though some plumping is good, they "hold their own" quite literally.  :D Mine had to be the worst ever made; I won't choose that "bag full of stuffing" style again! I want ones with a strong shape, piping, a good core etc. next time.
