mover/shipping/ocean freight usa/any suggestions?
« on: February 13, 2009, 11:47:45 PM »
Has anyone used oceanfreightusa.com?  What was your experience?  I know one other member has (there's a post on this page) but searching here and on google and movingscam.com brings up pretty much nothing.  I need to ship a number of boxes and UPakWeShip doesn't have a location close to me (Grand Rapids).

I am having a really hard time finding a reputable international mover near me, so any input is SO APPRECIATED, thanks!

I used Rainier Overseas twice (on the way to the UK and back to the US) and they were pretty good. No hidden fees or anything. The experience really all depends on the people they contract to pack your stuff and load the container. However, if you just have boxes and you're packing them yourself then there's a lot less potential for dissatisfaction. :)

I heard very good reports about Rainier. I chose UPakWeShip because they were going to be cheaper, I didn't mind the two month shipping time, and I had a local drop off point right in town. But if I had not been trying to keep the cost low, I would have chosen Rainier as they were on my shortlist.

I am going to use Upakweship over Rainier.  Rainier quoted me double the shipping time over Upakweship and they were also more exspensive  by about $100 which isn't much but the length of time of shipping was the deciding factor for me.

With both companies I didn't have a depot or warehouse near me, I will have to drive 2 1/2 hrs to deliver all my boxes.

Have you asked where the nearest warehouse for drop off is.  I understand if you are doing a container it can be a huge hassle if you live in the boonies like me but if you are only doing boxes it is easy to make the drive to drop off.  You can hire a U-haul etc... to get your stuff to the warehouse where they will wrap your pallet and send it on it's way.

Good Luck.

I agree, even if you have to drive a couple of hours to your drop off point, if you just have boxes, rent a u-haul or even a large suv or minivan, and when you get there they will palletize/wrap, you sign the papers, it's on it's way. I had a choice of driving mine from Austin directly to the Houston docks drop off location, which would drop my UPak total price by a couple of hundred, or drop off right in Austin at a warehouse just 12 miles from my door, but have to pay that couple hundred more because it would have to be trucked by them to Houston anyway. I was about to rent a u-haul and drive to Houston, but in the end there were several hassles that would involve and I just decided to use my compact car to drive my boxes to the Austin drop off. Surprisingly it only took two runs for 28 boxes some an awkward size and shape!

I used Echo Transworld and they were fine.  Arrived in less than 6 weeks and nothing was broken.  Pickup and deliver door to door.

UPakWeShip is most likely going to be cheaper than a full service provider since they aren't providing a full service. If you do go with a full service provider I'd recommend Rainier but realize that your experience is going to depend on the people they contract to pack/load on the US side and unpack on the UK side.
