What "should" you be doing?
« on: February 14, 2009, 02:49:30 PM »
I am in an organizing sort of mood today, and I sat down to make a list of things I want to get in the habit of doing regularly. Then it occurred to me that it's virtually impossible to do all the things we are told we should. What have you been told you should be doing, by your mother, your doctor, your boss, some random online site, whoever, even if you are not doing it!  ;D

A few to start:

drink lots of water

meditate/pray

exercise

eat healthy food

get enough sleep

do a monthly breast exam

send thank you cards

change your oil every 3000 miles

keep a journal

take your vitamins

cut back on caffeine

watch your salt intake

(I could go on and on...)

what's on your list?  :)

Far too many things to list or even remember & it stresses me out to think about it all, so I don't - this is called procrastination, and I have achieved a fairly proficient (perhaps even expert) level of it by this time in my life - why should I ruin that streak now?  ;D

;D Yes! This is why I started the thread. Who actually DOES everything we're supposed to? It would be a full time job.

No, you can't.  I've learned a few years ago (the wisdom that comes with getting older, I guess) that you must pick your battles.  Doing 3 things that improve your quality of life is better than stressing over 10 things and then not doing them because you are too stressed about it.

I'd say my top things for now are:
1.  Consistently drink more water.
2.  Practice my music more and on a regular basis.
3.  Try to get more calcium in my diet.
4.  Get my eyes checked (and other parts) I've been neglecting.
5.  Try to find joy and beauty in life everyday--stay inspired and keep it all in perspective.

I think 5 things is plenty.

I don't buy the drink more water thing anymore. I just drink a lot of fluid. So I just try to keep the sugar to a minimum in that.

Eat healthier and more ethically.

Spend more quality time with my kids (illness has made this hard lately).

Control my clutter.

Find a happy life/work balance.

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Focus on being more productive with my studies.

Get a J*O*B.

Force myself out of my happy little nest and get a social life.

Continue to eat well and be mindful of my overall health even after I (hopefully) resolve my tinnitus problem.

...the whole damn thing will turn
and return redefined, rearranged, rearranged...

Not eat before bedtime.
Do dishes are I use them.
Dust more than once every two weeks.
Pear down my wardrobe.
And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
"Thank you for being a friend!"

Haha!  I totally agree.  But I throw my hat in the ring and say that (among many other things), I should:

Do yoga more often

Drink more water

Get my sweet tooth under control

Do a better job of keeping in touch with friends and family back in the US
