Blueberries?
« on: February 19, 2009, 09:50:49 PM »
I'm really jonesing for blueberry muffins, but my DH seems to think that blueberries aren't terribly popular here.  I hope he's wrong because they're my favorite fruit, but I was in Morrison's tonight and didn't see any, fresh, frozen or dried.  I do remember seeing a tiny container at Tesco a while back, but it was kind of pricey.  Does anyone know where blueberries can be had, preferably not for too much money?

Our farm shop has lovely local ones in the summer! I don't know about finding them in February, though.

I've always seen them at Tescos and even our local Tesco Express carries them all the time.

I buy them to have with American pancakes, but they are pricey out of season.

I don't know about Morrisons, as I hated shopping there, but I usually found them frozen at Tesco and/or Sainsburys. Even Asda IIRC. The frozen ones are smaller than the fresh ones... what the call 'wild' if I'm not mistaken.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Mmmm, wild blueberries.  I'll look at Tesco for some frozen ones.  Thanks, everyone!

I wonder if there are any 'pick your own' blueberry farms.  I used to do that in Massachusetts.  One in the bucket and one in my mouth.  At the end of the day, time for the Tide Stainstick pen....yummm...blueberries.  :)

Definitely stick to frozen until they come in to season. They're very dear right now but very plentiful in the summer!

The fresh ones seems to be pretty expensive here, but frozen ones are usually not too bad. We've got a giant tub of frozen blueberries permanently in our freezer that are great for tossing into porridges and baked goods. Blueberries are possibly my favourite food ever, so these enough for me when I get the cravings!

Costco do huge tubs of fresh or frozen blueberries, but our Tesco also do frozen bags of them (and grab some frozen summer fruits while you're at it, too, especially if you like smoothies!).

They've had fresh blueberries on sale at Sainsbury's for the last few weeks, I have been having them in my cereal every day. YUM! Also, if you are a lazy baker, they have the good gourmet-style Betty Crocker blueberry muffin mix at Asda with the tin of blueberries in the box. I might make those tomorrow morning!  ;D

I think you will notice the price of Blueberries going down in the UK over the next few years.  British farmers are now starting to jump on the bandwagon on growing our own blueberries rather than importing them.

There are fresh blueberries in Morrison's and Asda - the other week Asda were selling them at 39p a pack as they were close to the sell by date so I got 3 packs.
They always have them - they had a 2 for £3 offer (I think) at Morrison's today.

Thanks for all the replies, everyone.  I'm really glad to hear that there may be domestic British blueberries soon.  I love them but DH is wary, he doesn't think that food should be blue  ::)

I found some fresh blueberries, so it's muffins for Sunday brunch!  Hooray!
