FLR(M) granted
« on: February 24, 2009, 04:34:45 PM »
It was a long 3 hour wait in the Sheffield PEO but I got my FLR on Monday.  Hooray!!!   :D
But...
It says Mrs. June J. Smith, the name on my passport.  I don't like that.  Not at all!  I'm divorced from Mr. Smith, I'm now married to Mr. Wonderful, I'm not Mrs. Smith anymore and I don't want anyone to call me Mrs. Smith anymore.  Darn, Darn, Darn!!!    >:(

That probably sounds nit-picky to some of you but it hit a nerve with me.  If I pay for a new passport in the near future can I get a new name on my FLR (indentity card) without too much fuss?

Thank you Vicky!  I think I'll start saving up now.
It just feels icky to know I'm Mrs. W and don't get to be called that.   :(

What does your passport say?

My passport says "June J. Smith".  It's not my maiden name or my married name (which is now June J. W), it's the name I got from my EX-husband.   :(

They tend to issue visas (or I assume in your case a ID Card) in the name that appears in the passport.  I am sure someone will yell at me if I am wrong, but I think the only way to address the issue is to get your US passport changed to the proper name and then go through an get your visa/ID Card re-issued in the new name.

Logically it makes sense, because it could look like visa or ID Card didn't belong to the appropriate person if the names were different.

Yeah, this is pretty standard I think for most, if not all, countries.

Congratulations on getting the visa, and the short wait (since you did it in person!)!!!

My passport is in my former married name - I've been divorced for years and now been married to my DH for nearly 2 years.  The fact that my visa is in my former name hasn't stopped me from adjusting to life with my new name, now opening accounts, etc., with my new name.  The only time I notice these days is if I buy an airplane ticket, and I've done that three times since we've been married.

I decided it wasn't worth the expense to make the change when the passport expires in 2010 (I got the visa in 2007) and I decided to wait until shortly before time to apply for ILR to renew my passport - which I'll be sending off anyday now.  So, when my new passport arrives, it will be in my new name, which then means my ILR will be in my new name too.  I figure 'temporary' residency, I could deal with the old name, but permanent residency (and soon citizenship) is more important to have in my new name...

But, as others have said, it is 'fixable' if you want to pay to have it done...
UK resident since 2005, UK citizen as of 2010 due to female British parent.

Just realised that the £160 I quoted is just for a visa, not an ID card.  I don't know how that would work.

Congrats, June!  I'm divorced, too but since I never changed my surname with that marriage the visa was just issued in my maiden name.

Congrats, June!!

I also have my FLR(M) in my other name (although not from a previous marriage). I thought about having everything changed over with a new passport and having the vignette transferred with the updated married name, but I figure I can wait until I go for citizenship anyway.

I can understand though why you would want to though, still.
