OK, I thought it was in this thread somewhere... but I can't find it. Who has seen Far From the Madding Crowd and which film version is best? I'm reading the novel now and want to watch the film, but can't decide which one. There's a 1998 version and a 1967 version with Terence Stamp. Which one shall I choose?

Definitely the 1967 version with Julie Christie, Alan Bates, et al.

( i didnt know there was a 1998 version, but i dont think anything can beat this one!)

Thanks! I assumed whoever said they liked the film was probably talking about the older version, but I wasn't sure. Maybe afterwards I can give the newer version a watch and see if it's good, too.

I love British comedies and tend to hate American comedies.  American comedies tend to be too in-your-face for my taste.  I like the drier comedy.

Some I've enjoyed for an easy make you feel good kind of night (off the top of my head):
The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill and Came Down a Mountain
Saving Grace
Ladies in Lavender
Keeping Mum
Kinky Boots
and I'll add my votes to Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead--too, too funny!

Several of my faves have already got a mention, but here's a few more:

Some classics...
    Georgy Girl
    Billy Liar
    Darling
    Blow Up
    Performance
The Man Who Fell to Earth
Bedazzled (with Peter Cook and Dudley Moore--NOT the god-awful remake!)

Excellent dramas based on true stories...
    The Krays
    Scandal
    The Young Poisner’s Handbook
    Let Him Have It

Any thing by Mike Leigh (though he's not to everybody's taste...) esp. Naked and Secrets and Lies

Paperhouse -- little known but very good little thriller

Withnail and I -- one of the funniest films ever made.  Stars a young Richard E. Grant

Last Orders -- bittersweet drama with Helen Mirren, Michael Caine, Bob Hoskins,
    Tom Courtney and David Hemmings
