Reputation Feature
« on: March 03, 2009, 11:59:41 AM »
I am nearly finished installing a new feature, User Reputation. It is being installed on a trial basis to enable members to give other members thanks or kudos for posts. The intent is for positive acknowledgements of contributions and the system will log your comments. Users will see the reason you left them as well as who left it (as will I and the Global Mods). You must have a minimum of 50 posts to be able to award Reputation.

Please give Rep/Kudos as a way of saying "thank you for posting that, it was great," or for good advice given, or for someone being supportive or a newcomer posting their intro. Please do not give award Reputation for flames or attacks or general negativity, they may be removed. There is a 12 hour wait time between giving repeat Rep points to a user so please give your points to the topics that deserve it. Silly Reputation reasons will be removed. Repeated abuse of the system can result in your usage restricted, in that your ability to give and/or receive Rep points will be suspended.

On some forums there is also a way to award negative Reputation, but this has been disabled here. We will only focus on the positive because this is a support forum. I have  disabled the ability to give Rep Awards on the common heated debate boards such as Pettifog and Politics, and the Games boards as they're not support oriented.

Right, lets flip the switches and see if it works...

If someone does this, is it possible to see the reasons anywhere? Or are the reasons just for mods to decide if it's valid or not?

If you look at your Profile Overview, you should be able to access a listing of what you received and what you've given. Double check it's there and let me know if not. I think everything is working as it should be.

Cool feature, Leah!
When I checked it said that I didn't have permission to see that information.

Heh. I belong to another forum that activated this feature, but allowed negative as well as positive feedback.

They had to disable the negative marks after a few days  :)

Thanks Leah!  Another forum I belong to has a simple 'thanks' button, which is nice for just letting the poster know you appreciate that post (it's also got a secondary usage of tracking whether you've read a post or not).

I was going to say the same thing, as I think it's nice to have a way to give thanks so people know if others actually appreciated their tips or help. Rep is a good idea, though I do like "Thanks" buttons a bit better (like the ones on Moneysavingexpert.com) because you just hit "thanks" and a list is compiled of who gave thanks, but you don't type in a reason (so it's just quick and easy to do and to see which posts got lots of thanks). I was wondering just yesterday if it was possible to add something like that to this board, or if it would require a completely different system to get it in place.
