New trend. Wearing PJ's in public. What's your take.
« on: March 03, 2009, 11:18:11 PM »
It was DW birthday yesterday so we went to the local Red Lobster restaurant. A couple, probably in their 50's, came and were shown to the next table and I saw he was wearing his pyjama bottoms. I don't think anyone noticed except me. I think this is becoming more common because they are more comfortable plus they are $8 a pair instead of $28 for pants. What's everyone's take on this?
Remember there are no belt buckles or belts on them and the "fly" is not closed but you don't see anything.
Oh I forgot to mention this was the second time I saw someone wearing the same things  yesterday in Target.

This is hardly new.  I used to wear flannel pajama bottoms to class when I was at university ten years ago.  And to the grocery store, and sometimes to the local Chinese buffet, now that I think on it.  I would be surprised to see adults at Red Lobster in their pajamas, though.

I used to do that myself when I worked at the factory midnight shift. I would have several people ask me if I forgot to change my clothes before I came to work. I would look at them an say no if I have to be here well then I'm going to be wearing something comfortable.  ;)  ;D  I would also wear them to the grocery store, Walmart, or any other errand I had to do. I didn't care what other people thought I wasn't exposing anything & they weren't tight so I didn't see what the problem was with my outfit.  ::)  :P

I wear pj bottoms in public (usually w/a t-shirt or tank top) if I have a to run out quickly to target or walgreens or somewhere to grab something. I had a 7:30 class one semester and wore them there too.

However, I would never wear them out to eat at somewhere like Red Lobster. Maybe to McDonald's, but not to a nice sit down restaurant.

Great subject...I'm a NorCal lady and have been living in London for 1.5 years now.  I would think nothing of wear my flannel bottoms to coffee or the grocery store in Cali, however would never think of that here.   My hubby would have a heart attack :o.  You almost feel funny for wearing sweat pants to the park. In Cali, I lived near a college town so most of the population was students running around in their pj's.

I miss the casualness of California so much, not to mention the sun!  Hubby's lucky I love him!

Not necessarily pajamas, but I often wore lounge/yoga type pants when out and about in the states.  I don't do it here, though- when I was an exchange student in halls a few years ago some of the other American students made the mistake of going to the dining hall in pajama bottoms and got told off by the staff.  Not to mention my DH insists that wearing lounge type pants or tracksuit bottoms out to the store is completely chavtastic...so I stick with jeans. :)

Why the heck not?!  A la 'The Dude':

I like to wear my jammies & go braless as much as I can - but I don't think I could in public - someone would probably get hurt!  :o

My pajamas aren't seen in public except when bringing in the milk, and occasionally when rushing to put the bin bags out because I've forgotten until I've actually heard the truck coming.

Some pajamas aren't really that much different from sweats though.

I woudln't say it's a recent trend.  I think it's been happening for quite some time.  I personally haven't worn PJ's out and about since highschool about 12 years ago.  Even at uni, I never quite understood the desire to wear PJs to class.  It never created the right frame of mind for me.  I would have been too comfortable and not been able to focus on class.

I think people have taken casualwear a bit too far.  I think it's a shame that jeans are generally considered "dressed up" for going out.  I like the idea of 1950-60's style dressing up for dinner or running errands.  But probably because I just love the look of the dresses from that time.  I wish that people still had to dress up to fly.  I hate seeing people in sweats at the airport, toting their pillow around with them.

I think men should be required to wear kilts and no trousers.

I totally agree! Especially with the airport thing. I understand it may a long flight, blah blah blah (I've taken them too!) but there's no need to wear pajamas. There are plenty of regular pants that can be comfortable for that long. Heck, I'd rather see them in track pants almost. You can always spot the American kids all over the world because of their pjs (often rolled down their waists/hips to expose their tummies.) Some of my students wanted to dress like this when I took a group over to France last year. I told them that we were not going to be dressing like that on the plane or in France!

As Stacey (of Stacey and Clinton) would say "Comfortable doesn't equal sloppy".
