Scotland in March?
« on: March 04, 2009, 12:50:12 PM »
OK I know there's been a similar topic recently...however!

DH, DD (9 months) and I are headed to Ayrshire, Scotland this month for a week's holiday. We've booked into a private cottage for 7 nights and I'm just looking for ideas for sightseeing in that area of Scotland.

We're planning on heading to Sterling to see the Wallace Monument for a day and we're trying to decide if we should make the drive to Oban to catch the ferry to Tobamory (DD is just infatuated with Balamory) but other than just exploring Irvine (where my father's side of the family came from years and years ago) we don't really have much planned. DH had always gone to the Highlands when he visited but with DD being little we don't want to have her cooped up in the car for more than is necessary.

Weather I know could be a factor but it's never stopped us before.

So if anyone has any ideas...please share!

Thanks!

I really like Oban and the islands, but I have not been to Tobamory.

Depending upon where you are, there's loads of little towns on the coast that are worth a look - Troon, Largs (lovely beach).  Things you really must see include the Rabbie Burns centre (Alloway) and Culzean Castle (close to Maybole).

Driving from Ayr to Oban is quite a journey and the ferries to Mull might be restrictive this time of year, so be prepared for a long day and/or an overnight stay if you're set on Tobermory.

It's not really my side of the country but I hope this helps, enjoy!

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll have to check them out before we go to make sure that they're open...

DH seems to think that we can make the drive from Ayr to Oban in 3 hours...I'm not so sure. But we've checked and the ferry runs at 8 am & 10 am then back to Oban at 3pm & 5pm (I think that's the times he told me) so I'm just wondering if it would be worth waking her up at the buttcrack of dawn to drive all that way when she really won't remember any of it...Oh well.

Thanks! We're finally getting our honeymoon after a year!

Enjoy it!  I know i'm biased but Scotland is a beautiful country - even when the weather is a bit dodgy!  ;)
