spread on everyslice?!
« on: March 04, 2009, 02:01:39 PM »
So, why is it that butter or spread has to be put on every slice of bread, no matter what kind of sandwich you're making with it. Even for peanut butter on toast, my DH still wants spread before I put the peanut butter on.  Or a tuna sandwich--spread, then the mayo and tuna. Why??  So many unnecessary calories and fat grams!  (DH says it tastes dry without the spread.)   ???

Maybe it is just personal taste and how his Mummy made his sandwiches?

My DH does this as well...I just remind him that I don't like butter on my sandwiches. Just like he only likes Mayo on one side of his...

Mine does the butter *instead* of any other sandwich lube. Not sure if he butters peanut butter, though.

But, yes. Every slice.

Buttering every sandwich is just a thing here...I don't know if there's a specific reason for it, though. One of the many customs/quirks of British life. :)

Bleugh.

DH does this to a large degree. I had to restrain him, though, when he tried to do it with hotdogs!

And spread is vile. At least use proper butter! (IMO, of course!)

I have nightmares of generic spread at sandwich shops....and my FIL loved his Udderly Budderly.  EEP!

Real butter person here too!  I miss all the nice butters... here they cost the earth.  Must check out local dairy soon.

I'm not a fan of the butter + mayo combo, but my bf does it. I don't eat a lot of peanut butter sandwiches, but I when I do I always use butter on them.

Different strokes and all that!  :)

Yeap, different tastes
If he's making a sarnie for you, just ask him to leave off the butter/butter spread :)

I jibe my BF all the time for eating sarnies with nothing on them- just bread and *vile from a tin* corned beef
He likes it though, so whatever makes him happy!  :)

My DH and in-laws do this too.  I am the only one in the house who eats real butter, and who doesn't put spread on every sandwich.  What gets me most is the bacon sandwiches, with bacon cooked in oil, thick spread on both pieces of bread, and brown sauce.  I can't even think about it without shuddering.  But then, I love peanut butter, and they all think it's disgusting, so I think it just comes down to what you grew up with.

Yep, this has come up before and I still think it's gross!  Hubby puts spread (we use olive oil spread so at least it's not junky margerine) or butter on every slice as well including slices with marmite, tuna, peanutbutter, etc.

I'm with you--not only does it make for some gross combos, but a total waste of fat grams and calories!

My DH puts butter on every sandwich too and it makes me cringe. Butter on a salami sandwich... really?? That is just a bad combination.

Butter or Olive Spread, never marg or other fake spread, but yep, on everything.

With anything involving toast or a hot filling, it just adds to the flavour...who doesn't love butter on hot toast?  And when that butter is mixed with marmite...yum!

The only thing I don't but butter on now is cheese on toast.

As for cold sandwiches, I tried to go without but it just doesn't work.

I think it's either something that you were raised with or an acquired taste...I have a friend from Wisconsin that uses butter or spread on her sarnies. But the lady at Subway in Cali looked at her as if she was from a different planet when she asked for butter and mayo...I had to tell my friend that they don't do butter on samiches in Cali.

This is by no means a universal Wisconsin thing, though.  I grew up in WI and the only time I encountered anything like this was in college when I had a roommate who used to eat butter and jam sandwiches.

Yes, butter on sandwiches is also a Mid-western thing--maybe British immigrants brought it over?  A vegetarian cook book written by a Mid-western person had a veggie burger recipe which suggested buttering the burger bun before adding the burger.  Just not necessary.  Now *ketchup* on the other hand.....yum!

cross-posted with historyenne--sorry I shouldn't have assumed it was universally a mid-west thing!  What do I know?  Born and bred Philly girl that I am!
