Registries?

Almost everybody here (UK) asked us if had a wedding list.  We were both ambivalent about the idea, but decided to just go with the flow.

And yes, like what historyenne has said, people in the US also appreciated the list for the very reason she has cited.

We weren't spring chickens but we were setting up house for the first time, together.  Nobody forced anyone to buy off the wedding list, or anything at all.  Most of our gifts were off the list, some weren't, a couple people didn't get us anything - it was all okay.  Everyone was happy, and we all lived happily ever after. 

I registered at Debenhams in Dublin. It's been great and I really like their registry options. One thing to keep in mind though, just because they have Debenham's in the UK and Ireland, they run a little different. I tried to register at the store in Bristol because that is where I was living at the time and it would be most convenient. They wouldn't let me register there because I would be living in Dublin at the time of delivery, so we had to register there. That's fine, but what was a little annoying was that I couldn't go into any Debenham's and update my list. I could only use the one in Dublin. They give you the option of allowing your guests free delivery or a 50 euro gift card. We opted for free delivery for our guests. Some people have bought us some things (like a coffee maker), but didn't use the registry. I went in to have it taken off and someone had already purchased it for us off the registry. So, they just credited us the cost onto a gift card and we can use it for something else. I thought that was really handy.

Personally, I don't like to buy things for people off registries, but I know some people appreciate them. And it is fun to go around the store blip blipping things!

For me, it all depends on how close I am to the bride/groom/both and how well I know them and their personal tastes-house. Like for instance, a co-workers wedding- I had been to her house only a few times and didn't know exactly what she had and didn't have and I didn't know her hubby-to-be at all.  So, that was helpful.  A good friends wedding? Nope, definitley not something off the registry!
