For the most part, I would always write things such as CDs, IRAs, CPUs; however, I'm not fond of three As because it could be confused with as.  This is one example where I would use a comma.

I would too.  But probably not in a formal situation like Belita's.

I've written PM's for "private messages" on this board before because PMs didn't say quite what I meant. ;)

I used to be a lot more careful about punctuation but Lynn Truss kind of put me off with her vitriolic pedantry.  I think maybe now I'm on a pendulum swing in the opposite direction?  Bring on the dot-dot-dots, the misplaced apostrophes, the misused dashes, and the incomplete sentences. ;D

D'oh.  Apostrophe, not comma.  I'm such a dolt.

What does the apostrophe in "D'oh" represent? I sometimes write it that way and sometimes just as "Doh," but I'm never quite sure. I know it's not a real word, so there's probably no correct or incorrect way to do it, but I have always wondered about that apostrophe.

My day job is publishing academic catalogs for universities, and my favorite thing is the registrar showdown, when one person will edit all of the Oxford commas out of the catalog copy, and another will edit them all back in. And it goes back and forth, and I keep having to take 1,000s of commas out, and then put them back in.  [smiley=mean.gif] [smiley=argue.gif]

I have 'Vampire Weekend' in my head now, which is a very good thing.

I am ashamed to say that I had to look up Oxford Comma, and it turns out that I am militantly against them.  Who knew?

I use the Oxford comma.  See my post above.  My eleven year old son tries to correct me, but I won't change.  I tend to overuse commas anyway.  I like the way they "sound". :)

You really don't want to hear my convoluted explanation behind the use of the apostrophe in that word!

I could see D'oh being sort of along the lines of t'internet.  ;) :P

Yay for Oxford commas - it looks weird without them!

I'm asked to proofread at work from time to time - and my gawd! The run-on sentences that the Brits I work with tend to write! I'm forever adding commas, breaking up run-ons into smaller sentences, etc. You'd think they're afraid of punctuation!

But in "t'internet" the apostrophe is there to replace the "he." What does it replace in "D'oh"?

Oh, yes I do!!  ;D

I'd venture to guess it could be either Duh+oh (merging the two words together), or phonetically; making it a bit more dramatic :)

Oh, so I have YOU to blame for my various obsessions with certain colleges/unis as a high school junior!  I may never get over the fact that I didn't go to Mount Holyoke...  [smiley=cry2.gif]

Well, the things ya learn.
I just looked up 'Oxford Comma' - and now I get it!

It used to baffle me when my old boss - a High Court Judge, a Knight, and an amazingly well educated, etc. man ;) - would use it all the time, and here I was, correcting it, then he'd put it back in!

I had to look it up as well.  I've always known it as a serial comma in that position.  And yes, I use them myself.
