Student Visa (Tier 4) Changes
« on: March 09, 2009, 02:27:34 PM »
I just read the new guidelines for students looking to study in the UK, online just this morning at http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/studyingintheuk/applyingafter-March/

The biggest thing I noticed (for me, anyway) is that after a completely a graduate program, you can only stay in the UK for an addition 4 months, not 1 year like before.

Did anything else stick out to you?

That's not new- 4 months of leave after the end of the course has always been UKBA's policy.

They specify how much money you'll need: £800/month in London, £600 elsewhere.  It's nice to have numbers.

Agreed- if there's one thing about the new Tier system that I like, it's that they specify exactly how much money you need to meet the requirements. :)

43. Any partners of children who want to come to the United Kingdom with you must also have documentary proof that they have enough money to support themselves. You can find more information in the dependant's guidance, which can be found on our website.

I didn't notice specific maintenance requirements for dependents if applying after March 31. Am I overlooking something?

Thanks,
Rose

Dependent monies are from page 28. £533/month per child in London, £400 elsewhere.  Also, it looks like you only need to prove you have enough money for 9 months, even if you're staying longer.  It seems to be very cut and dry now, which makes things easier for people trying to figure out if they meet the requirements for entry.

Hi impleri,

Thanks! I think that's for Child Student only (I'm applying as adult and my husband is my dependent applicant). I'd like to assume that it'll be the same for us, but I don't see that specified (as it is for everything else, as you pointed out).

You're right that it is nice to only have to prove maintenance for nine months if staying longer.

So 2400 pounds a monthfor me and three kids? For 9 months only.  I think 2400 a month actually sounds about right. Scary, really expensive, but right.

You can apply for a post-study work visa which lasts 2 years, if you want to stay longer then that 4 months.  Just make sure you do it from within the UK, as the maintenance funds are substantially lower from within rather then from your home country.

What do they consider London to be exactly?
