That's so awful, pb. It's such a cliche, but why is it always the good ones who go so young? :(

My cousin and his family (wife and two little boys) live in Japan. They were at a park when the quake hit and are, at last check, ok. Minimal damage to their apartment so far but the aftershocks are scaring everyone and these fires are also scary. Praying.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Glad they're okay! Hope they stay that way.

That quake/tsunami sounds awful. The video shots of cars, houses, etc. being swept away were horrific.

I think my BFF is still in Hawaii just now -- hope the Islands aren't too hard hit. Also West Coast.

Japan has earthquake building codes, break-waters - all the marvels of modern engineering for resisting earthquake and tsunami - and plans for dealing with situations like this. As awful as this is, as hard as they're being hit (a nuclear reactor melting down as well? It never rains but it pours), I can't help but think how much worse it could be. I am grateful for all the people who insisted that safety measures be taken, that the extra money be spent, for all the buildings that didn't collapse, all the lives that weren't lost.

My mother just called my uncle (Dad to the cousin in Japan). We thought he'd have been awake but he'd slept in and she caught him just as he'd woken up and seen the news. He was a wreck as he'd not checked email or anything yet and was expecting to have heard the worst.  :\\\'(

Needless to say, we're blessed my cousin and his family are fine, but the video is terrifying and my heart is breaking for all those caught up in this.  :(

My very favorite great uncle passed away today.  It's like it never rains, but it f***ing pours.  My family is absolutely gutted and I feel like the worst kid ever for not being able to be home.  I can't take anymore bad news this year.   :\\\'(
