Our neighbor's house was broken into last evening around 9:30pm. We were watching TV and we heard a noise, but living in the city you hear noises all the time. DH did get up to look out back, but we have a fence and he didn't see anything in our immediate back yard. About 20 minutes later I checked Facebook and someone in a local neighborhood group said they saw two guys going up our alley with their arms full of electronics. So, I made DH go back out into the alley to look. I went out and I went around the fence to look in our neighbor's back area (she has a parking pad, no fence) and her door was hanging open and the lights were out. I went around the front to knock on her door and saw her basement light was on, which is unusual. Of course she wasn't home (the car wasn't in the parking pad). We called 911. When the police were there they said they were in her house for a while and they cleaned her out. We never heard a thing after that initial noise. I am just gutted for her. Apparently she's away (thankfully, so her dog wasn't there when this happened) and no one has her phone number, so she's going to come back from vacation with a boarded up back door and a mess in her house. This is basically my worst nightmare every time we go on vacation. They don't want her to go into the house and touch anything as they're hoping to get prints. We think that the people were probably scoping out her property all day and they saw her packing her car to go away.

Poor thing! You never want it to happen, but to come home to it after an enjoyable time away seems worse.

Thanks everyone. She came home from her trip yesterday. She said they took a window a/c unit that she had in the basement (okey doke!) and that her mom's jewelry was safe, so she was happy about that. All in all she was in pretty good spirits for someone who needs to buy a new computer and TV!

Glad to hear she is in pretty good spirits. Maybe it was because they took  replaceable 'stuff' and not the sentimental 'stuff' with memories that make it impossible to replace. Sure, you can buy a ring, bracelet or necklace just like the one your mom or grandma gave you, but it wouldn't have been worn by her or hold the memories. Those are the things I would be most devastated to lose.

Agreed.  One of the times we were burgled, they took TV, video, jewellery (junk), etc. etc. which I was fine with but they also stole a little oil painting that had belonged to my great grandma.  Wouldn't have been worth anything but it was something to me.

Well, we put our cat to sleep today.  :\\\'( She was 17 years old and, even though she was her old self, she was obviously ill as she was very jaundiced. It really sucks. I realized that it's the first time in 18 years that I haven't had a cat. Weird.

Big hugs to you. Letting go of a furry family member is never easy. A new furbaby will wander into your heart when the time is right.

So sorry to hear that, CCG.  It's always hard, no matter how old they get to be.  Hugs.

I'm so sorry, K. We're dealing with an elderly cat at the moment and thought of having to say goodbye is killing me. Big hugs to you and your family. xxxx
