Oh Legs, I'm so sorry to hear this. :( I hope your mom's situation is mild, and you and your family can get helpful information from her/the hospital soon.

Thanks everyone.

I just got off the phone with my sister (the one that lives 5 states away from my parents, and not the one that lives with them).  Apparently, she has sepsis again, this time triggered by the pneumonia she had around Christmas.  This time the nurse said they don't think they will need to put a PICC line in.  She also doesn't think the infection has remained since the last time she had it.

She definitely had a mild heart attack, but they think it has to do with sepsis (as well as the CHF), and not other causes.  I hope, however, they check her for other issues with her heart.  She has a lot of risk factors.

Sepsis is the 10th leading cause of death in the US, which is something I didn't know.  I am hoping that they caught this early enough and they can treat the organ problems.  I probably won't know more for a while, because last time it was just a wait and see.  I can't see this time being much different.

Sending good thoughts your mom's way, LA.  Hope she's on the mend soon.

Well, she's home today.  She has to go back and do heart cathertization as an out patient.  She's angry at my sister who lives far from them because my sister called the doctor and suggested some things to help her (nutritionist, physical therapist).  I can sort of understand her being upset by it, but she's also not taking responsibility for herself. Problem is, there's more than one way to go about it.  I am not sure if she's upset that my sister called the doctor and got information she wasn't telling us (that her lungs were very bad and that she needs to be on oxygen all the time) or that she made the suggestions.

I think I FINALLY convinced her that she could have had a heart attack.  She says she didn't have chest or jaw pains so that it couldn't be a heart attack.  I pointed out that some women have asymptomatic heart attacks, and that that is why so many women end up dying with what appears to be their first heart attack.  Either it goes on so long it kills them, or it turns out it wasn't their first one.

But, she is home and resting more comfortably than in the hospital.  I guess what is really the worst of it is that I wasn't aware of some things that I am now, and it paints a totally different picture of what is going on there than I had even a few weeks ago.

My boss had a heart attack last summer, and he said it just felt like heartburn all day and the only odd thing was that the pain shifted over an inch or two throughout the day. He then played a game of 5-a-side the next day, and it was only later that day that he felt clammy and had numbness in his arm, etc and rang 999, and the paramedics and doctors said if he'd waited any longer, more damage would've been done. But it was the first day where the actual heart attack happened, when he didn't think it was anything at all.

Glad to hear she's home, though. Being in her own bed and eating nice food is sure to give her mood a lift!

I'm really sorry to hear that. I hope it's something treatable. In the meantime, have a good cry.  :(

I'm really sorry to hear about your friend. If it makes her feel any better, you can tell her I said chemo wasn't anywhere near as bad as I thought it would be. In fact, one piece of advice I was given by a guy who had his transplant before me was "Nothing is ever as bad as you imagine it will be". And he was totally right. Big hugs to her.
