I'm fairly certain that if you were to check the statistics, mohels are no more likely to botch things up than a doctor - possibly less so. But the reality is that with any surgical procedure, there is a risk.

my question is this, where might i be able to check these statistics? (i've been online all day looking/researching into this topic. i've nearly gone mad from it all!)
second, in fear of sounding too 'american', should a procedure done by a mohel end up botched (lack of better word at the moment), if there are not medically certified, what grounds for legal action would there be, i wonder?

(trust me, i'm not raising these points to make anyone upset or mad, these are all things i've been thinking about today!)

i would have start research into all this a lot sooner had i known it would end up being so difficult...

Lunar, I think your best bet might be to get in touch with a rabbi/temple/jewish centre. In this case I'm not sure Google will answer you questions! I don't know where you live but you'll certainly find good sized Jewish communities in London and Manchester. I would suspect that the mohels have to be insured in this day and age but couldn't guarantee it.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Lunar, I should also add that I am guessing you aren't Jewish. In which case, there's no guarantee the mohels will even agree to this but I have NO idea. I don't know what your reasons are for wanting this procedure but do be aware that you may really have to justify it no matter where you get it done.

Hi Lunar we are having a boy (fairly soon but not as soon as you!) too and we want to have him cicrumcised but I haven't asked anyone about it yet.  I'm seeing the hospital midwife on Monday so I'll ask about it then and report back.

I think our GP might be Jewish (well his name is Dr Goldberg) but I don't know if that will make any difference. I am kind of expecting to run into some stupid argument about they will only do it on cultural/religious grounds in which case I plan on saying well my husband is American and in his culture this is what they do ...

Oops just did a Google search and found this:

http://www.circumcisions.co.uk/

Seems you can't get it on the NHS unless it is to correct a medical problem.  Good grief WHAT am I paying all that national insurance for??

Well, dear Britwife, one of the things you're not paying for is cosmetic surgery for all and sundry!  ;) ;D

My first job was as a cleaner in a hospital's circumcision ward -  it paid £6 an hour plus tips.

Wow,

I'm really glad I'm having a girl, I was worried before I knew the gender as I knew I would be here in the UK and circumsicition was def something we would have wanted for our child.

Good Luck!
Joanne

It just seems I can't get anything I want on the NHS, like not being able to see the same midwife at every appointment, you just get whoever is available and its luck of the draw who actually delivers your baby. I thought the S in NHS stood for SERVICE, silly me.  Don't get me wrong, I think the NHS is great in many respects and I would not want to go private (even if I could afford to) but it just seems to me the way it works needs re-evaluating. I mean, my 86 year old grandmother is having to wait 6 WEEKS for a CT scan to detect a suspected stroke.  Anything could happen in 6 weeks!

OK rant over I don't want this to get shifted to Pettifog !

To be fair, this was my midwife experience in Florida with my youngest as well - it was a team of midwives and you just saw whoever was on the rotation that day.  :P

Yeah, it's happening more and more in the US, too. Espcially if you are part of the military but definitely withint he private sector, too.

congrats on having a boy!!!  [smiley=balloon.gif]

please do let me know what your midwife says... we are also going to ask the consultant tomorrow when we see him for my appointment to discuss my options now that i am overdue...(will let you know if i find out any information not already found)..

thanks for the link.. haven't seen that one before and have bookmarked it..

we knew the NHS would not cover this procedure unless deemed medically needed, which is fair enough. having it done privately is not a problem, we are just looking for some guidance on the issue..

if you want, i could PM you the URL that Stacey sent me....

:) take care
