How does council tax work? Will I recieve a bill or do I need to register someplace?

I am renting (the term is still renting not letting isn't it?) a flat if it matters.

You should get a bill from the council.

But you need to call them to make sure they know your details and that you are getting your single person's discount.

Our council has a form to fill out online when you move into a property in the city...they will then calculate the correct amount of council tax (usually pro-rata the first year) and send you a bill.  Definitely give them a ring or look on the council website to sort it out...if you do nothing it will work itself out eventually, but easier to get it sorted if you're proactive (not to mention you get proof of address sooner!)

Just to add to the good info so far

1. The property you live in will have a 'Band' rating according to its value and to an extent its geographical location. Check the local council website to see the band ratings. You'll need to give them a call (unless you have been told which band it's in) to find out which band the property you are renting is in. The 'Yearly' amount will then be shown.

2. You can spread the payments to be monthly, or quarterly. There may be other options so check with the council on those.

3. If you are the lone person renting the property, you are eligible for a Single Persons discount of 25% off the total.

4. You will be responsible for the Council tax  payment etc, unless the deal is you pay for the council tax in the rent amount you pay to the landlord.

Pretty much all of the prior info and the above should be covered on the local council's website. Do give them a call to discuss any elements though. I've recently had to deal with my council over a Council tax issue with my tenant, and I found great service for the little problem that presented itself.

Definitely notify them - in writing - as soon as you move in if you are living alone.   Although there are procedures for backdating a claim, some councils have an extremely obstructive attitude, and will all but totally refuse to allow the single-person discount to be applied for the period before you notified them.
