I've heard some people taste coriander differently.  It always tastes ghastly and chemical like to me.

The leaves, and especially the stems, have a very different taste from the seeds, similar to parsley but "juicier" and with citrus-like overtones. Some people instead perceive an unpleasant "soapy" taste and/or a rank smell. This is believed to be a result of an enzyme that changes the way they taste coriander leaves, a genetic trait, but has yet to be fully researched.

Cilantro does taste different for, I think it is 20% of the population who taste soap when they eat it... that might be the chemical taste your tasting hatsumomo.

Coming from a big family i was simply taught to just pick out the stuff you didnt like and eat the rest, so most foods i will tolerate even if i dont eat them

I really dislike

olives (green or black)
sweet pickles
patte (blech can't see how so many people here like this)

Cardamom. And, well, anything anise-flavored.

Oh, yes!  I had a bad run-in with some Pernod when I was about 16, and I've never been able to stand anise after that.

This is certainly an interesting thread and while I'm definitely no Andrew Zimmern, there's little food/drink for me that falls into this category, with the following exceptions:

Abalone - Takes too long to chew, when finished chewing it's tasteless.
Jellyfish - Tried to eat a Chinese style jellyfish salad several years ago that just simply turned me off to jellyfish for good.
Jumbo Oysters - Absolutely massive in size (and I mean jumbo), truly disgusting and tasteless.  The whole experience is one I'd like to forget but can't.

Me too!  Love cilantro.  Indian and Mexican food need cilantro!

As garnish that you can put to the side?  Sure. ;) ;D

I'll take any unwanted Jaffa Cakes also!!  This thread has got me thinking that taste buds are so strange... I could eat Jaffa Cakes everyday for the rest of my life and Phat cant stand them.  I wonder scientifically why that is?  Different connection from the tastebuds to the brain? or do they actually TASTE different to different people?  Hmm...

I was thinking the same thing, as people list things that I absolutely love (strong cheese, cilantro, pate, tomatoes mmm mmm mmm).  All part of life's rich tapestry, I guess  ;D

I used to be a lot pickier than I am now.

pickles
Jaffa Cakes
Christmas Pudding/cake
cottage cheese
mayonnaise
ham
uncooked mushrooms
white chocolate
coffee anything
that fennel/black licorice flavor

I'm not a fan of any fruit mixed with chocolate except for chocolate covered strawberries.

Oh, I forgot until someone else mentioned them - oysters... yuk! Far too slimy, and sometimes gritty, like there is still sand in there! Nasty! And they don't even taste like anything. So gross.

Shellfish of any kind
Fish unless it's like fish and chips from the chip shop
Game type meats ick

Are the foods you're listing stuff you've hated all your life? Or do you have food that you used to love and then something turned you off. Conversely, any foods you couldn't stand (in adulthood -- childhood picky-nedd(sp?) doesn't count) but love now?
And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
"Thank you for being a friend!"
