2. I made it this morning when I check their money under the light.

HAHAHA.

If you haven't got a sense of humour, you shouldn't be a cashier. I always say "I made sure it was dry before I brought it out".

This thread is a bit too much like this one for my comfort!

http://talk.uk-yankee.com/index.php?topic=45192.0

People started getting really narked and offended when others were criticising phrases that they used regularly!

Ok thank god, I was waiting for someone to say this was already discussed.   I was starting to wonder if I had a dream about this thread and that is why so many answers seem familiar.  I am not going crazy... *whew*

Also funny. ::)  Yes, you're right.  It's my fault for not finding it funny for the 9 millionth time I've heard it today.  ;)

Contrex, have you ever been a cashier? The garbage they have to put up with is just awful!!!
We are a nation that has a government -- not the other way around. And this makes us special among the nations of the earth. Our government has no power except that granted to it by the people. It is time to check and reverse the growth of government, which shows signs of having grown beyond the consent of the governed.

We're getting a lot of talk of "cross-fertilization" at work these days.  Worrying.

I have actually. We used to have a game where we pretended to the customer (theatrically enough to amuse each other but not so the customer would notice) that we hadn't heard the jokes before. So the situation was still funny. It does help if you actually like talking to people and if you can see their (no matter how lame) attempts to be jokey as them trying to be nice.

All I said was that I WISH they wouldn't say it.  I didn't say that I wasn't nice to them or I didn't understand why they did it (I do), just that I WISH they wouldn't say it a trillion times a day.  I usually (almost always) say you did a good job. I could hardly tell back to them.  And since 9 times out of ten it's the same customer who said it to me yesterday then chances are they know that I've heard the joke before.

Lighten up, Contrex.

HAHAHA.

When someone checks my money I just want to check my change....one of these days I'll have the nerve to do it!

You should ALWAYS check your change.  That's where all the dodgy notes and foreign coins come from!  People who don't check their change.

I'm sure the guys at the corner store near us are so sick of hearing "I'd like the winning lottery ticket" when people put in their numbers.

I get tired of hearing - when I ask a client 'is there anything else I can help you with today?'  (I work for an advice charity.)  'Yes - can you give me the winning lottery numbers?'  ::)  :)

Yes, check your change!  I would not be offended if a customer did this.  In fact, I count the change back for them as I put it into their hands.  That's how I learned to do it when I first started working.

Also, don't be offended by having your notes checked.  Cashiers are told that they must check notes.  We use one of those "clear yellow" pen things on all 20 pound notes.

Reminds me - a while back I found I had 2 Czech coins the size of 10p coins, came from the canteen at work

Oh I am so with you on the use of "myself", that one is a pet peeve of mine at work.  :P

oooh! Nails on a chalkboard. I think what really peeves me off about this error is that while most language mistakes are pretty innocent, this one people will make when they're trying to sound smart. It's an overcorrection. Throw the "she gave something to my friend and I" in there too.
And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
"Thank you for being a friend!"

Supposably.

I stopped hanging around those who used it.

The kids I teach like to say 'frickin' or 'freakin'' quite a lot.
I told them to replace it with 'bloody' :)

I will never acknowledge "irregardless" as a word.  It makes no sense!

That's one which annoys me too, along with several others which have already been mentioned.

I haven't seen "alright" mentioned yet.  To quote the old adage: It is not all right to write "alright."

I must just add, that I'm not terribly crazy about people who say "freaking", and even less crazy about the abominable " frickin' " but I'll let it pass this time...  ;)

Don't faint, but I agree!

He'll also say 'plug out'. As in, 'Can you please plug out the computer?' How about I 'unplug' it!

Not surprisingly, I don't like technical terms being misused.

"There's a plug on the wall under that window."

No there isn't.  The device on the wall is called a socket or receptacle.  The connector which fits into it is a plug.
