B & B in Lakes District, Yorkshire, or Scottish Borders?
« on: March 26, 2009, 11:22:24 AM »
Anyone have any recommendations for a nice B & B somewhere in any of these areas? I was looking for something for one night in May for our first anniversary. I would like some place nice and romantic in a quiet area, with a good breakfast, and that hopefully costs less than £100 per night! Any of these areas we can easily drive to on the Saturday morning, spend the day walking around or having a few drinks in a pub, etc., and then staying overnight and leaving after breakfast on the Sunday morning. Thanks!!!

I can't believe I am recommending Harrogate, but really it sounds perfect for one night.

My husband and I stayed here for two nights last July before our goods arrived from the states: http://www.applewoodhouse.co.uk/ We were in the Braeburn room and found it really comfortable and nice... not too fussy, but not too simple either.  The hosts were lovely people, breakfast was around a communal table and very friendly, the walk into town is pleasant and easy (I should know, I do it all the time since our townhouse is right down the street).  It's in an old home in a residential neighborhood south of the Stray.  If you're driving, there's good parking in the neighborhood, and Harrogate is just the right size for a short weekend trip.  You could even spend the afternoon in Harlow Carr Gardens and have a tea at Bettys.  Valley Gardens, the Stray, and town itself are all nice areas for a hand-in-hand stroll.  There are a couple of nice pubs in town, and a really great eating pub (Smith Arms in Beckwithshaw) a short 5 minute drive away.

Best of luck and congrats on the anniversary.

It's May 3rd.  :D  I just found this, and it looks pretty awesome, though I bet it's already booked. Anyone know anything about Augill Castle?

exjerseygirl, that looks good, too. There are so many options for places we could drive to considering our location, that it makes choosing something really tough!  ???

We stayed at the Mylne Bridge House in Windermere last year.  Good location, a reasonable price, and clean.

OK, forget the castle, I just realized these prices are listed per person per night, not just per night!  :P  I have found loads of them that interest me, but I have no idea what to pick, based on location. Red5, did you like Windermere? Or what do you think of Bowness-on-Windermere? Is that a nice area for scenic walks, etc.? This one has some really nice lake views from the rooms, which sounds pretty romantic:

Any advice is welcome!

exjerseygirl, I think DH is wanting something slightly more remote, from what he is telling me. I think scenic might be key for him. Is Harrogate pretty scenic?

I've always wanted to stay here:

Ambleside is wonderful and it would be awesome to get American-style pancakes! We never stayed as we always lived too close!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Ees Wyke Country House in the Lake District is lovely! It's about £120 a night, though, and more if you want an evening meal. Beatrix Potter's family used to spend summers there before she bought Hill Top Farm (which is within walking distance). A gorgeous spot!

Harrogate is a medium-sized town itself, with gorgeous gardens (they supposedly keep winning Britain in Bloom awards or something like that).  It's supposedly a popular jumping off point to places in the Dales (which are scenic by anyone's definition, I think).  DH and I spent a day driving to, around, and back from the Yorkshire Dales NP, which was quite nice.  It isn't a small Dales village or anything like that, where you'd be smack dab in the middle of the scenery.

I think Harrogate is a great short weekend getaway destination because there just isn't that much to see, per se, so you don't feel like you have to spend the day tramping from attraction to attraction. It's got several large, beautiful gardens that are excellent for lazy strolling and people-watching.  It's got lots of pubs/restaurants/cafes/etc to make it easy for a weekend tourist to grab a pick-me-up when they're dragging.  If you were using it as a base for a longer holiday it's well located and connected to nice sights such as the Dales, Fountains, Bolton and Rievaulx Abbies, and some great country walks.  I think lots of people base here for the Three Peaks Hikes, too.

For the boys, there are ALWAYS very high end cars parked around town, which makes Aston Martin / Ferrari / Lamborghini spotting quite fun and easy, too!  :P

I agree, there are just so many options, deciding what's important to you (urban v rural, sea v mountains, shopping v hiking, etc) is going to be critical to narrowing it down.

Oh man, since we got married in Texas that Texas suite would've been perfect, too, but it's already booked. In fact nearly all of the double rooms are already booked for that weekend. What sucks the most (well, it's good and bad) is that I just realized our anniversary falls on a bank holiday weekend, so rates are higher and it's a minimum 3 night stay at nearly every place I have looked at. Not sure how we can afford that... so now I am having to lower my standards a bit. Maybe I can come up with something for us. If not, I suppose we could just do something local. I guess closer to the time some of these places might post a special for the weekend. Do you think I should just wait until closer to the weekend to find something nice but less expensive?  :(

Somewhat OT:
May 3 is a great day, Jewlz.  Happy Anniversary from another May 3 bride. ;)

TBH we were only there for a day, as we were on our way to Oban.  We walked to Bowness-on-Windmere and went on a boat ride.  On the way back to the B&B we had a so-so meal at a pub. However, keep in mind we had our girls with us.
There seemed to be plenty of walking trails around.  I would have liked to explore it a bit more, but we were up early the next day to continue our journey.
Sorry I could not be more helpful.

You were helpful!  :D

I went with Balmerhon's suggestion of the American B&B in Ambleside - they will let us book for one night at a reasonable price, which includes a full American breakfast with pancakes!!!  ;D  I can't wait! I am sure we will find some things to do or just stay in and snog, hopefully!  :P
