In-Country UK Move...CHEAP BOXES??
« on: March 28, 2009, 02:37:24 PM »
DH and I are moving less than 5 miles away into a new flat and we're looking for cheap boxes...any help? We don't want to have to pay an arm and a leg for something that we will probably discard anyway after we're through.

Thanks.

I moved within the UK last June and the moving company supplied me with all the boxes I wanted for free - they were used boxes, but still fine once they were taped up. Are you using a company or doing it yourself? You could also ask at a neighbourhood shop - they might have extra ones they'd be glad to have off their hands.

Try signing up for your local freecycle and asking for some. I've seen loads go that way, 'cause when you're through with boxes you really don't want to keep them!

Asda will give you all the produce boxes you can carry for free.  They're not your standard moving boxes, but that's what DH and I used when we moved (right next door!) last month.  We hit up Asda for days on end and they were always happy to hand over the boxes.

We bought some online once. I forget the name of the company but the boxes were very sturdy and can be stored flat until you need them again.

Local shops and supermarkets usually have loads if you ask nicely.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone!!

Matt has made a couple visits to the shop across the road and the owner has graciously been setting aside spare boxes for us. Also, we're planning a late-evening visit to the 24-hour Tesco nearby when they're re-stocking their shelves...so hopefully we can get some more that way. We don't have much to go in boxes other than books and kitchen-ware. Clothes can all mostly fit into suitcases (again) or bin bags. We just didn't want to have to really pay for boxes that were going to be junked as soon as we were through.

Now we're just crossing fingers that we get the keys Friday.

Good luck with your move!

I was gonna suggest if you have a local co-op they're usually really good with setting boxes aside as they always have a cardboard trolley in back (flattened boxes etc).  When I worked for them a couple years back we'd get customers coming in regular to collect boxes for moving etc.   ;)
