Vinyl to CD?
« on: March 29, 2009, 03:12:22 PM »
I am on a mission to download all my mum's original 60's vinyl to CD.  She was a 'record a week' girl back in the day and she has some classics.

I have bought a gizmo called as Griffin iMic.  The idea is that one end is a USB to go in the laptop, and the other can connect into the turntable or amp.  I have also downloaded Audacity software.

I now need some help.  As far a I can see, I need to buy new cables to attach from the iMic to the amp, but I am not sure if this is the best or the easiest way to do this.  Also, the manual for the software is deeply confusing.

Is there anyone wh has done this before and can give me some tips?

Thanks.

Vicky

My dad has a big LP collection and currently spends a lot of his time transferring his LP onto CD. He uses the Audacity program, but has an actual USB turntable, so I'm pretty sure that all he does is plug in the USB cable, start the record playing and then it is recorded onto the PC via Audacity. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with iMics, so I'm not sure how they work  :(.

Hey Vicky,

Is it this thing?

If it is, it looks like you'd need a set of male to male RCA cables to go out of your amp into the red and white RCA connectors on the iMic.

Something like this from Amazon ought to work:

good luck,
Carl

I've never seen that particular interface, but as Carl says, it appears that you just need a pair of RCA plugs on that end of the cable (also commonly called phono plugs in Britain).

Many amplifiers also have RCA jacks for the auxiliary output or "tape record" output you will need to use, but some have 5-pin DIN sockets, for which you will need a cable like this:

It turned out that I didn't need the cables to connect to from the amp, but connected directly from the turntable to the IMic, and Audacity worked brilliantly.  I have put some of my mum's old 7", most of which are about 40 years old (the oldest from 1958!), onto my laptop.

Thanks

Vicky
