International calling, U.K. to U.S.
« on: March 30, 2009, 05:28:44 PM »
Currently 4p. connection per call, then no per-minute charges to the U.S. & Canada.  No other start-up or monthly fees.

I haven't had a chance to see how consistent the quality is yet, but a couple of calls so far have been fine.

Enjoy it while it lasts!   :D

I used last week with calls to France quite successfully.

The 0844 number listed there for calls to the U.S. is charged at 0.979p/min. from a regular BT landline - So only cheaper if your call is less than about 4 minutes in duration.

That one would be cheaper for calling France though.

If you have Sky you may want to check out switching to their phone plan.  We recently bundled TV, Broadband and Phone with Sky and the best thing for me has been free calls to the US!  There is a time limit of 60 min per call.  But already I have spoken to my friends and family way more than I did before.

We have the same package, and it's a good deal for US calls, and includes a bunch of other countries, too.  Also, if you're about to go over the 60 minutes, you can just hang up and call again.

I have Orange Broadband and with that a Orange Livebox, which gives me VOIP calls to anywhere in the world FREE as it uses the internet. I love it. Easy to use and no additional fees, other than my monthly cost of broadband which i get for only £5 as i also have Orange for my mobile. So for me its a win-win situation ...  ;D

We have BT and only pay a fiver each month for unlimited calls to the US, 60 min or less, but I have been known to hang up and call back if I need to. I talk to my family and friends a few times a week!  ;D

The "International Freedom" option?   Beware that it has a fairly low "fair usage" limit of 10 hours per month.

we use a combination of virgin media with free international calls included in our 200 minutes/month landline package, and subscribing to the mobile phone addon (O2, £3.50/month) that allows me to call the US for dirt cheap from my mobile.  Works for us :)

We have Virgin Media internation package, pay £1.50 a month and then calls to the US are 2p a minute. Seems ok infact it costs more to call my sister during the weekday and she lives 5 mins away!

Hmmm... I never knew that! Well, I have been here for 9 months and haven't gone over yet, I guess (suprisingly! I'm sure if I had, DH would let me know!), so maybe the 10 hours is enough for me. I only regularly call my parents, grandma, and best friend, and I also use the webcam with them, so I suppose this plan works for me. Good to know about that, though. Thanks!

Like most of the fair-use clauses, I expect BT wouldn't worry if you happen to exceed the 10-hour limit occasionally in one particular month, only if it becomes a regular occurrence.   If you divide the current price of £4.89 inc. VAT by the 600-minute allowance though, it works out to a little over 0.8p. per minute if you use your full quota each month, which is not as cheap as you can find service elsewhere (e.g. I was using 18185 before - 4p. connection plus 0.5p/min.).

Most of these calls are so cheap now that for occasional, light use it really doesn't matter much if you're paying 0.5p/min. or 1p/min., but the savings can add up quite quickly for longer and more frequent calls.

Looking at my last month's bill with 18185 I made 77 calls to the U.S. which came to a total of £15.63.  With ZeroP that same number of calls would cost £3.08.   :)

Hi all!

Calls have become very cheap nowadays - Free if you and the other user use Skype etc!

For traditional phone calls, I use Swiftcall, a relatively 'high' monthly access charge of £19.99 / month but has 0207 and 0800 access, free calls for the UK at anytime and free calls to the USA/Canada including of course mobiles. I think this package also includes calls to around 25 Euro countries as well. A very 'high' fair usage policy, 75 minute call cutoff and then just redial. Call quality is simply the 'best' as it of course uses copper/traditional cables.

Vonage is similar - but uses the IP protocol, excellent call quality and a cheaper access charge. However, as I've called from my Swiftcall account to a Vonage user in the US - I'd say theres much more brief cutouts, some longer 10-20 seconds 'static noise' gaps and occasionally dropped calls etc. For me, just enough to delay with getting the vonage option for now.

If of course those slight drawbacks dont matter - go for the Vonage option and save some money!

Hope this helps ! Cheers! DtM! West London & Slough UK!

I took the route of having a US number through Yahoo, and routing the calls to my UK number - means that my wife's mother can call my Port Amboy number for free (local call), and I pay 1¢ per minute.
