London vs New York
« on: March 31, 2009, 03:06:20 AM »
Not necessarily a standoff between the two, but I just got back from a weekend visit to New York city. I came home and found a Times (was it?) article about the two cities, their differences and similarities. They were even called sibling cities. I just want to know, for those who have visited or lived in both, how do they compare, and which one would you choose to live in and why? Please and thank you.

I've visited both several times.

If I had to chose where to live between the two, I'd say NYC every time.

I visited New York for my 21st birthday after having lived in New Mexico for 9 months and travelling across the US on my way there, and I felt that NYC was the closest I'd come to feeling like I was 'home' (home being England) in the entire year that I was in the US.

I haven't lived in either London or New York, but I think I could probably live in either city if I had the opportunity - although it's been almost 5 years since I went to NYC though and I was only there for 4 days, so I don't know enough about the city to say for sure whether I'd choose it over London or not. I feel that the similarities between the two are due to the high populations of both cities (I have spent a lot of time in New Mexico and in Arkansas where the population densities are very low and it feels like there's hardly anyone around), the busy, close-together streets and the climate (I was in NYC at the end of May and the weather that week (about 60 degrees with some rain) was very similar to the weather in the UK at the time, so it felt more like home than the 90-degree weather in NM). I also felt much safer during the 4 days I spent in NYC than in the 9 months I'd been living in NM, and I have also always felt safe in London when I have visited :).

I haven't lived in either city but have visited both a lot. I prefer London without a doubt, but it's hard to pinpoint why. I just prefer the feel of the city. It's much more interesting to me than NYC has ever been.

I love both, I live in London now and have spent a summer in NYC and visited lots.
Generally I prefer London, I think it's more interesting, I like the historical aspects, and I find it more beautiful because it's so surprising, I love turning a corner and finding myself in an alley of ramshackle cottages being dwarfed by a giant new glass building.

I love NYC too, mainly because I like tall buildings and infrastructure. It's a great city. I would be hard pressed to choose! :)

As a Long Islander, I consider myself to be a New Yorker by default, and I would chose NYC every time. I am not a great fan of London, I have lived there on two long term ocassions (about six months each time) and I always have come back to Manchester. IMO and this is JUST FROM MY EXPERIENCE FROM MY OWN LIFE EXPERIENCES the people in London were never friendly, nor were they looking to meet new people, Manchester, well, thats a different kettle of fish entirely. I love going home to visit NYC, and I could spend weeks there, when ever I have to go down to London for anything, I can feel the Northwest calling me back. London and NYC have similar feels, but completely different types of people.

I'm another one who has only visited both- taken in complete isolation, I probably slightly prefer NYC to London, but I do like them both.  However, if I was really going to make a choice to live in either of those places, I'd choose London, because it's here in the UK.

I've lived in both, and I'd choose NYC over London if you just compare the two cities and not the benefits and disadvantages of living in the countries to which they belong.  It's really the only urban environment where I've felt happy.  The only major advantages that London has over NYC is that it is easier to get into real estate market here (for both buying or renting, but especially renting) and there are more free/by donation galleries and museums here.

I love NYC and hate London.  I don't really see how they are very similar at all.  I don't think they have the same feel and I never understand why people think New Yorkers are so unfriendly.  Maybe they are compared to some other areas in the States but compared to a lot of British people they are downright chipper.
