Should I get the "how to arrive and thrive in the uk" guide?
« on: April 01, 2009, 08:43:36 AM »
I found this guide online before I found this forum and had decided to get it eventually, but it does cost money. Now I've found this site and Im not sure that I need it anymore, but thought I'd ask what everyone thought.

the guide- http://www.ukimmigrate.co.uk/

Should I still get it or will this site exhaustively offer all the information I need?

Yes it is a bit overwhelming at times, but when I think of her it all becomes just small things for me to overcome.

I'd say no.  If you spend enough time on this forum, you'll learn all you need to know to arrive, thrive, drive, stay alive, etc...in the UK. :)

Haha thank you. I thought that might be true, but wanted to make sure.   :)

I received a reviewer's copy of this.  I can check to see if I kept it or not, if so you're welcome to it (on the premise that you actually write the review)  :)

Actually I think I'll stick with the forums. That's very generous of you to offer though, maybe someone else would take you up on that?

Hehe, you'll learn a lot when you get to the UK, and it's fun to figure things out once you get there. I found a lot of my fiance's mates wanted to help me figure things out, because they were tickled pink to have a Yank around (they live in Daventry, it's not a big tourist spot at all) :P And these forums will help with a lot of the details, especially once you move over, I'm sure I won't be done with UK-Y when I get my visa :)

The longest running on-going problem I have had with "thriving in the UK" is what do you do with those three little drawers on the washing machine?

Having solved the where-do-you-get peanut butter problem, plus the how-do-you-convert-a-driving-license crisis, plus why-do-I-have-to-pay-to-watch-TV, plus scores of others, I'm still left with the 3 little drawers on the washing machine...

I've lived here most of my life, and I still can't figure out which drawer the fabric softener goes in  :P.

Yeah, that's a bit of a  ??? moment for me, since here in the States I just throw soap and stuff in because I have a top loading dryer. My fiance keeps having to point it out to me, so I'll just end up drawing myself a diagram to hang in the kitchen for when he's not around :P

The biggest  ??? though was the mixer tap (no, I won't make jokes about it) but it was a big deal for me, since I wasn't quite sure how to get it to the right temperature, I just kept turning knobs like a big dork till I finally got it right.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for mentioning this.  I've been here 4 and a half years, and have never been able to figure that out.  I've been to embarrassed to ask anyone around me, and even to afraid to ask on here since I never saw mention of it, I assumed I was the only one befuddled by it!

It's sort of logical, in sequence during the wash process you go from left to right usually:

Pre-wash for when your clothes are heavily soiled (often a 1 or I symbol)
Normal wash (often the biggest of the three, may have a 2 or II symbol)
Conditioner/Rinse Aid (often smaller than the other two, may have a little flower symbol)

This is why I just toss the detergent in with the clothes themselves.  I can't sort out the compartments either.
