Getting a mortgage in the US while living in the UK
« on: April 03, 2009, 06:28:33 AM »
I'm an american citizen working in the UK on a Tier 1 and looking to buy a house in the US.

Anyone know if it's difficult to get a mortgage from a US bank on a US residence as an expatriate?

Thanks!

Hi there,

I wouldn't have thought this would be much of an issue depending on how much of a deposit you are able and willing to put down. Even though alot of mortgage deals have been removed from the market, and I am speculating a little here, there are probably some good deals still available in the US if you put down a substantial deposit. Any smaller amounts, and you'll probably be subject to all the employment checks, time working there, credit history etc etc etc. at which point you'd probably have to disclose you're working out of the US.

there's probably other issues involved as well such as tax and if you're moving money from here to the US, currency and fees and any subsequent US taxes you'd need to pay on the money coming in.

Lastly, it's tough out there for mortgages and getting a decent rate etc, but there are still some deals - see how you go in getting something suitable.

good luck ! DtM! West London & Slough UK!
