Hot Cross Buns
« on: April 03, 2009, 01:20:21 PM »
It's Easter-time!

Do you eat hot cross buns?  Do you like them?  Do you bake them?

I just had a chocolate hot cross bun from Ainsley's & it was good - but that was mostly because of the chocolate in it!

Last year around this time, I had a Simnel cake from Betty's Tea Room.  I think I liked that better than hot cross buns.  But neither had any edge over a Yorkshire fat rascal - available year-round.

No, and I don't like the way they smell either.

That's what I think too.  I have yet to see the appeal, but I thought maybe I'm missing something - which is why I had to try the chocolate one today.  :)

Maybe they are supposed to be toasted & buttered?

I don't like them, but for some reason my husband loves them.  He buys them and it's great because I'm not tempted to eat them at all.

Much better toasted and buttered.... I make my own usually (but both our higher end stores are making them this year here in VA... Fresh Market and UKROPS)
and my Simnel cake is to die for.  I mean a hot cross bun is just bread with raisins or currents.

UK store bought ones for the most part are crap IMO.  Though I did have some posh ones from M&S that were nice.

I think it's one of those fruit cake things. You hate it or love it.

That's what I mean - I don't 'get' it.  Like why are they at all popular?  At least I'm not the only one.  I don't hate them, but there are lots of other much nicer things to have.

i dont think i know anyone who eats them.
They'd rather eat a fruit scone, if they're going to eat something like that.

I love hot cross buns!! Yes, you have to have them warm and buttered. But a chocolate one really sounds sort of nasty to me!

Do you have a good recipe, vnicepeeps?

And, yes, simnel cake is HEAVEN!!!

i dont think i know anyone who eats them.

I like them toasted and buttered, imo they are the same as Tea Cakes (which I love toasted and buttered) but more religious!

Love hot cross buns and my new favourite thing Hot Cross Bun Loaf!  It reminds me of raisin bread I used to have as a kid.  I eat them toasted and buttered. Is there any other way?

My in-laws eat them and I have to choke one down every year at Easter.

The only ones I like are homemade ones - I've yet to come across a store bought hot cross bun that didn't taste like cardboard.

I hate them.  Not even chocolate could improve them, in my opinion.

I also hate simnel cake.  Bleugh.  I'm not usually a picky eater, honest!  I just really dislike bread/cake with fruit in it.
