I love them and I bake them every year.  It is hard to get them to not be dry, but if they are toasted and spread with butter it doesn't matter anyway!

I actually enjoyed the Warburton's Hot Cross Bun Loaf toasted and buttered over the hot cross buns I've had.

Love hot cross buns and my new favourite thing Hot Cross Bun Loaf!  It reminds me of raisin bread I used to have as a kid.  I eat them toasted and buttered. Is there any other way?

Just saw this. Yeah, it does sort of remind me of raisin bread. It's nice with cream cheese on, too.

I love hot cross buns... my mouth starts watering the moment I smell them in the bakery section of the supermarket :P.

I would never eat them cold and on their own though (even the thought of eating them that way seems gross :P)- they have to be toasted under the grill and smothered in butter :).

I hated the American version -- those nasty bits of colored peel or whatever it is.  But quite liked the British ones with just raisins and lots of icing.  :)

What's simnel cake?
And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew

A fruit cake that's supposed to have marzipan apostles on top.  Usually lighter than Christmas cake.  Often associated with Mothering Sunday.

Hate the store bought rubbish that they wheel out every year.

Best one I ever had was from the Lacock bakery, straight from the oven. Solid, warm and perfect!

I've never seen anything like that! It sounds delicious though. Where can I buy some?

I love hot cross buns! But the only, only, only way to eat them is toasted with plentiful butter melting all through them -- they are never meant to be eaten dry like a regular bread roll or bun or pastry. That's not the way they are supposed to be consumed -- it would be like putting cold pasta sauce straight from the jar onto cooked pasta, instead of heating the sauce too. It's "not done."

My family always had them fresh from the local bakeries at this time of year, so it's a nice childhood memory for me -- the "hot" part of the name is all about the toasting.

You never eat them 'as they come' - always warmed through.  My Dad was always in charge of doing the HCBs on Good Friday morning.  He puts them on a wire tray above a baking tray of water and heats them through in the oven.  They way they get crispy on the top and stay moist from the steam.  Cut in half and spread with lots of butter - fantastic.

I can't make them (I've had a few disasters trying) but supermarket ones are rubbish.  Try to find a good local baker and get them fresh.

You can buy Simnel cake just about anywhere.  Mr. Kipling do their own version & Simnel slices.  I know Sainsbury's do a nice looking cake (marzipan eggs on it), but if memory serves it was about £10-15 for their own make cake!   :o

I love Hot cross buns!  Like others have mentioned toasted with butter is fab!  DD likes them with Strawberry Jam on them.  They're great with a good cuppa.

I love hot cross buns, either as they are buttered, warmed for a few seconds in the microwaved and then buttered, or toasted and buttered

Blech! I thought I'd like them because someone basically told me they were like cinnamon raisin bread, but they aren't. I found the combination of spices really not appealing .
