She took the money, but...
« on: April 05, 2009, 10:49:31 PM »
My father died earlier this year, and one of the provisions in his will provided for his beloved dog.

He left his dog to the original breeder along with the sum of 20,000 dollars to take care of the dog when it got old.

So she took the money and the dog, and then turned right around and dropped the dog off at the pet adoption agency.  Nobody in the family can do anything because the will failed to stipulate that she actually had to keep it.

Is that a bite in the ass or what?

Oh. Jesus. Professional breeder? I'd be on to her...whatever their accrediting agency is, like a shot. Does it work like that?

It would be hard to do *nothing*.

Sadly a lot of these "professional" breeders only care about money.  Can someone you know will take care of the dog adopt it at least?

That sucks!  Can you track what happened to the dog?

No advice Garry, but that really sucks.  Sorry to hear about your father's passing x

Sue the attorney for failing to draft the will correctly.

Thanks for the support everybody.  One of my distant cousins is working to get custody of the dog.  But you gotta admit, that's one brassy breeder.  20K richer for naught.

Garry, I hope your cousin can get the dog.  I can't imagine how the poor creature feels after losing two homes so quickly.

What she did may be legal, but it is unethical.  If there is a way to name and shame this woman among her peers, I'd consider it.  I asked a breeder/shower about this, and she said there is no way she'd want to be associated with this type of person.

That's awful, Garry. I agree with the others that while there's probably nothing you can do legally, there must be some way to discredit this woman professionally. Is there some sort of regulatory body governing breeders? Some national association they must belong to? Surely there's some way you could make public what she's done.

What a great idea!  I will do this.  She can't say it's defamatory because where defamation is concerned truth is an absolute defense.  So I can just recount what happened and leave the conclusions for any readers who chance upon it while searching for breeders.

Good idea.  Glad I posted this article.

If the dog is a purebred, there has to be a rescue group out there for the dog.  If the cousin doesn't get to the "adoption place" in time, please have him check with any nearby rescues for that breed.

What type of "adoption place" did the dog go to?  If it is a shelter, your cousin will probably have to pay as an adopter.  If he's got a connection in rescue, they often get free shelter pulls.  Transport can also be done for free via many networks of volunteers.

Too bad this dog probably isn't in Texas.  I've been involved in small-animal rescue for a decade, but do have dog and transport contacts.

That is SO appalling and reprehensible :-( :-( I'm so sorry Garry, and I don't have any advice for you but what others have said sounds like a fab. idea. Make sure other people KNOW what this breeder has done!!

How evil and unethical!

Agree with others, word of mouth can be a good thing in this case.
