converting funds on bank statement
« on: April 10, 2009, 03:32:13 AM »
Hi!
The visa application website states that when submitting the bank statement as proof of maintenance funds for the year of studying in London, the statement must show the dollar amount converted into pounds.  How the heck do I get the bank to provide that, or is that pretty standard?  Or am I misunderstanding what I am supposed to do?

On another note, does anyone have a feel for typical waiting times for hearing back from the unis after applications are received?  This is for a grad program.  In the states, it seems like it can take forever.

Thanks!

Basically, the funds must be converted using either the statement date or the annual average as listed on oanda.com.  The UKBA Immigration Rules, Appendix A says "Earnings in a foreign currency will be converted to pound sterling (£) using the closing spot exchange rate for the last day of the period for which the applicant has claimed earnings in that currency."  This also applies to savings, etc.

Does the bank do this, or do I hand write it on the statement?  Thanks again!

You do it yourself.  UKBA is supposed to check it as well.  I'm pretty sure you can just put the converted total in your cover letter (or as an attachment to your statements).  I wouldn't write it on the statements themselves.

On the bit about processing times for applications, it took an average of 5 weeks for me to be notified of a decision.  However, I did apply very early, as they may not have as many applications to go through.  I think it also depends on the university.  The more competitive ones take much longer.  Good luck!
