Best Pet Names
« on: April 20, 2009, 04:27:09 PM »
Ok, this is kind of a spin-off from the recent thread about names you like. A lot of people gave cat and dog names, as well, so I thought maybe we could just focus on that for a bit. I am hoping to adopt a kitten soon, and could use some name inspiration!

I really like Springhaze's cat's name Milo.  :) Our dog is named Bailee, and my other kitties were Lily and Jude. I once knew a cat named Gouda Cheese!  :)

My cats have all had human names...
Scotty was a tuxedo cat.
Henry is a Maine Coon.
Elizabeth (Liz) is a Russian Blue.
Simon is a silver & blue tabby.

I miss my kitties!

Yay! glad you like Milo.  It's a fab name and totally suits our cat.  My childhood kitty (who is aging gracefully at my parents' house) is Marshall (obviously also a boy!).  My first ever cat (that sadly had to be put down due to feline leukemia) was a female kitten named Clover.

DH and I also kept rats until very recently- we had a pair of sisters named Aurora (Rory for short) and Crystal.  They were silver & white huskie ratties so we tried to give them ice/snow related names.

The beautiful kitties I had to give away before I moved are Luna, an enormous part Rag Doll that loves watermelon, and Mochi, a funny white/orange/seal calico, that used to furrow her little brow at me when she wanted attention.
I miss them.  :\\\'(

My cats and my cars have all had human names.  My two current companions are Henry and Eliza (named long before we even had a glimmer of an idea we'd be moving to England).

I totally thought this was going to be a thread about what sort of pet names we call our SOs - like Pookie and Pumpkin and so on. :D

I have had a LOT of cats in my life (my parents live in the middle of the woods with lots of outbuildings and stuff so there are a LOT of cats).  I have to go back to work now but when I get home I'll see how many I can remember. ;D

oh, I have some more kitty names to share!  When I was a kid, we semi-adopted our neighbours' kittens for a couple of weeks and looked after them while they were on holiday.  They were brand new kittens and we didn't know what their names were so we dubbed them Georgia and Virginia. :)

We had a neighbor who had a Boston terrier named, 'Mugsy'.

I had another neighbor with an English bulldog named, 'Crash'.

Perfect names!

The dog we had when I was growing up was named Major General Alexander Nairne after a character in one of the Sharpe books that my parents were reading when we got him.  We called him Alex.

My mom has Welsh terriers now, so she gave them Welsh names -- Owen and Morgan

My parents' old dog who died when I was a baby was called Sinchi after the Incan emperor Sinchi Roca (They had just returned from South America when they got him).

My grandmother had a dog named Twinkle Toes

I had two betta fish in a split tank who used to face off across the plastic divider.  I called them Wellington and Napoleon.

I've got a Maine Coon mix named Lilly.  We also had two grey cats who recently passed away, Misha and Boris.  Although Misha was *this* close to being named Bitey. ;D

Other pets in my life (past and present):
 - Clancy, an Irish Setter
 - Bum and Baloo, both golden labs
 - Noodle and Feldman, my brother's cats
 - Mariah, a mutt we had when I was a kid (and the reason I've never been able to take Mariah Carey seriously)
 - My husband had two cats when I met him, Erpiller and Astrophe.  As in, "This is my cat, Erpiller, and my cat, Atstrophe." ::)
 - Snoopy and Smokey, both Siamese cats
 - another Siamese named Miles, after Miles Davis (who died the same week we got him)
 - but, by far, my favorite cat name ever was Elemenopee

We're planning on getting a dog in the near future, and my five year-old informed me he wants to name it Mucho, which I think is kind of fabulous.

As a kid, I had horrible luck with cats. Their average life span was less than six months.  :\\\'( My mom agreed to get one last cat, and we named her Hope. Because I hoped she would live. (She did :) )

Hope had two kittens that my dad named Spit and Spat. Because that's what they would do when they were little and you tried to pick them up. Spit went missing early on, but I had Spat for about 13 years.

We also had two little chicks. One was white and the other was black (from the same hen). They were named Ping and Pong.

My sister got a kitten when she was about two years old. She named it Thomasina and was absolutely convinced it was a girl. (It was a boy) It ended up growing up to weigh 25+ lbs and absolutely nothing we said could convince her that this huge cat was a boy. To this day, she will still argue that Thomasina was a girl.  ::) ;D

Other Pets I've had:

- Ginger-Ella, (1/2 Cocker, 1/2 who knows what)
- Sunny and Simba (2 Labs)
- Laura Maria (A cocker -I got her when I was a pre-teen, she was named after Laura Ingalls Wilder and Maria Von Trapp)
-Sally the pony
- Wilma, Jingle Bells, and Bambina (all goats)

I used to work at an animal shelter and had to name thousands of animals!  We usually picked human names too - it seemed to give the homeless animals more of an identity and helped them get adopted more quickly.  I used Liam and Olivia a lot just because I like the name and people usually said they would keep it once they adopted the animal. Jasper was another one people seemed to like (good choice sheate!)
We also used human surnames often - Churchill was a favourite for sophisticated older cats :)

Oh, so many cats in our house growing up.  Mostly mixed-breeds or strays.  Mortimer, Ralph (a female), Roy, Siegfried (years after Roy, unfortunately), Raul, Stan, and Tilly (short for Attila).  I miss having kitties.  And I'm devastated that DH is allergic to them!
