Giraffe is not just in London - we have one here in the new shopping centre in Bristol and I've been to the one in Exeter too.

Other locations are listed here: http://www.giraffe.net/locations_list.php :).

None in Sheffield :(  Would have to go to Manchester to get my American pancake fix!  Making it at home it is, then, sigh.

How about this?

Although the breakfast menu link doesn't work, I'm sure I saw before that they did American pancakes.

My house on most Saturday mornings...though not with buttermilk.  Does that make a huge difference?

Vicky

I am not a fan of American pancakes (bleh), but I'd say that it probably does.  How do you make yours?  Buckwheat?

Flour, pinch of salt, vanilla essence, sugar, baking powder, egg, milk.  Whizz up to a thick creamy texture and fry.

Always open to advice on how to improve.

For American pancakes, I always add melted butter.

This, with buttermilk instead of milk and a little melted butter.  I would leave out the sugar too, because I generally eat them with something sweet.

The sugar is a new thing, but I am definitely getting buttermilk at the weekend...thank God for Waitrose being my nearest supermarket!

I've also heard that they sell it at some Morrison's.  It does make a big difference in some recipes.

They sell it everywhere. It's in Tesco and Somerfield, too. Perhaps your area is different, but I don't think I've been in a supermarket that doesn't sell buttermilk!

Yeah, city stores tend not to stock the things that are in the bigger stores.  Even our sort of full sized Sainsbury's would probably be seen as bare bones compared to what many of you used to shopping at bigger stores are used to seeing.

When I've shopped at Waitrose (never been to a full sized one) or Morrison's (nearest one to me, Camden Town which is a bit of a bus journey), I wasn't looking for buttermilk.  The Sommerfield I've been to on the West End is slightly bigger than a convenience store, and I would be shocked to see it there.  They literally had like two types of Cheddar on offer when I was there, which is almost Un-English.

ETA: When I say "city stores" I mean near central London.  Lots of bigger stores seem to be available the further you get from the Square Mile.

The Somerfield in Soho is stocked purely for local drinkers and people who get the munchies on the way back from the pub!

Somerfield is a glorified convenience store imo. I have been looking out for Buttermilk this week (for no real reason, just to see where they sell it) and I have seen it at every regular supermarket.

Like any supermarket, it depends on the size of the shop. The one I used to shop at was great. Their bakery beat all the other big supermarkets hands down!
