Getting ready to move over. Birth control question...
« on: April 24, 2009, 11:53:00 PM »
I'm sure this is obvious, but i'm wondering if I should stock pile on my birth control before coming over, or if the same options and brands are available there?

Some are available and some are not. Which birth control are you on?
And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
"Thank you for being a friend!"

I'm not sure about what forms or brands of birth control are available in the UK (well, not yet anyway). But, your best bet might be to have a few months worth available from the states so you have it just in case you have any delays sorting out a GP or finding the right kind of birth control for you (if they don't have the nuva ring, I don't know off the top of my head).

I don't know about the Nuva Ring, either, but I didn't have any problems getting BC pills as just a visitor, so I'm sure you'll have no problems getting them once you're settled, but like a few have said, it's probably best to at least bring a few months supply with you so you don't need to worry right away about finding a doctor.

Oh, you're in luck! Found this via Google: http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/136659.php . The Nuva Ring has been available since January 2009 in the UK :)

Although, I'd still bring a few month's supply with you, and maybe talk to your US Doctor about getting a copy of your prescription or a letter to take to your UK doctor, too.

Becca how were you able to get birth control pills as just a visitor? I am just wonderng because I stock piled before I came over not thinking I could get them over here till I got married and got my NHS number and was legal?

birth control is an exception- it's free for everyone in the UK, visitor, resident, citizen, or whoever else.

nuva ring tell me it's there!

I was asking this same question last year! I'm glad to find it is there (thanks, Becca for that link!) Great news!! I also love the idea of it being free (well, relatively, since you do pay taxes, etc) instead of an extra $50/month!

I would definitely stockpile a few months' worth, though. Are you going to your doctor one last time? She might be willing to give you some samples (I'm not ashamed, either! I ask if I need!) :)

Springhaze...thank you so much for that info...I have been paying full price for my birth control in the states cause I don't have insurance because I am getting ready to get my marriage visa...and I am staying here on a visitor visa for a few months...do I just go to a pharmacy and ask for it or do I have to visit a dr?

You can go to a GP or to a family planning clinic and get a prescription, take it to the pharmacy and voila!

I went to a GP and got pills for free twice.  Somewhere there's a thread where I posted about it :)

Yeah, if only it was free in the US, too.

NuvaRing is not readily available in the UK (yet), though it must be increasing in popularity very slowly, as I saw an ad for it in my (UK) Glamour magazine this month!  You may get luckily if you visit a busier, more progressive family planning clinic, but it will be totally dependent on whether your GP or clinic has heard of it/has access.  I used to use the NuvaRing in the US, but used Implanon (quite similar, except it's permanently implanted in your upper arm for 3 yrs) when I moved here.

yes, the nuva ring isnt as readily available here as in the us. If anyone knows more on how to wangle it outta your gp, let me hear em. I only just twisted his arm into giving me yasmin.
