I see your point, but a million pounds seems excessive.  Besides, my understanding is that it's a million pounds to invest, so maintenance funds would necessarily be separate. 


I think the investment requirement is so high is because this is a visa to encourage people to ...well..invest. I agree though, if we were talking about a retired person of independent means type of visa, a million would be excessive.
And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
"Thank you for being a friend!"

We had elderly parents from Zimbabwe refused a few months ago.  That's how hard it is.
