Black Pudding.. I puked
« on: April 28, 2009, 10:01:23 AM »
So we stayed overnight in London since it was DF's Birthday and got a free breakfast with our room. We go downstairs and a nice buffet is set up with tons of food and drink. I'm in good spirits and happy to be here.

Gareth tells me "oh try this it's black pudding" then walks away from the table to get some eggs. I take a small bite, think it's gross, and when he gets back tell him I hated it. Then he goes on to tell me what it is. GREAT. I pretty much ran for the bathroom, puked up my breakfast, and felt ill all day. So much so I puked again two hours later just thinking about it.

I'm less then thrilled. Why oh why didn't anyone warn me what this was ahead of time?!?!?!
 :P

He should have told you what it was before you ate it, not nice! I hope your tummy has recovered!

He said he was gonna tell me when he sat back down. I just happened to taste it while he went back to the buffet. I'm better today as long as I don't think about it too much. Thanks heh.

Whoa...DH and I stayed at a hotel up in the highlands Sunday night and you would have really hated our "full Scottish breakfast."  In addition to black pudding, we had bacon, sausage, mushrooms, roast tomato, a potato scone, eggs and HAGGIS!  I like haggis and black pudding, but all that stuff on one plate is pretty heavy going for a morning meal.  I ate about a quarter of what I was given, and still left the table completely stuffed. :)

I never tried black pudding, because Tim doesn't like it.  He told me to tell the waiter to omit it when we stopped for breakfast at a Little Chef, and they gave me hash browns instead.

I wondered if it was similar to what the Amish call simply "pudding", but our version is sort of soupy and gets served on top of toast. I've only ever seen Black Pudding fried into black lumps (well, slices).

Not really.  Black pudding is made from blood.

Ew.

I *think* Amish Pudding is made from pig leftovers.  It's one of those thins you can't quite google an answer for, but it's sold at the Amish butcher shops usually as a slice of "puddin" and then you heat it on the stove until it melts into mush. The closest thing I could find on Wiki is Liver Mush - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liver_pudding

Black pudding in also morcilla in Spain and Blutworst in Germany.  The Cajuns do a version of boudin with blood too.

I grew up eating it so don't find it gross.  I always say it's not worse than eating hot dogs or any other form of processed meat or really processed food for that matter.

At least I am aware of what I am eating instead of having it hidden under the label "pork products" or "meat products".

No. Well, I wouldn't call it like scrapple, as I don't like scrapple but when I was younger I didn't mind eating pudding.  A friend of mine tried to compare it to scrapple, and offended my mom!

I believe the Portuguese have their own version of blood sausage/black pudding as well, and I'm 1/4 Portuguese so I've grown up knowing vaguely what it was about--but that still didn't mean that I didn't think the concept was gross :P But, honestly when I tried it, it didn't taste like anything. I got it in a restaurant which is prolly why, but I just put ketchup all over it and that was that. Though I guess it was pretty obvious I was the only American in there :)

But yeah, like Steve says, it's not really any worse than a hot dog or some other tube of byproducts that I eat *shrug*

I love scrapple.  My PA Dutch Grampa used to say it was everything but the squeal.

I'm not really a fan but i'd still rather eat black pudding than the typical hot dog or baloney.   ;D
