Non-chip and pin cards at cash points?
« on: May 01, 2009, 07:47:43 AM »
Hi!

I've got a friend coming to visit in a couple weeks.  I don't believe his bank check card has a chip in it.  Can he still withdraw money from a cash point here?  When I'd come to visit the UK years ago, I'd just pull ££'s out of a cashpoint so I didn't have to pay the ridiculous currency exchange fees.  I'm just not sure if this is still possible seeing as everything is going chip and pin.

I'm kind of in a rush so I didn't get a chance to search past threads for this so if there is one, can someone link it to me please?  Otherwise, any answers are greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Yep! I don't believe ATM's use the chip, they read the information off the strip on the back of the card.  As long as his check card is linked to a international network like Visa or Cirrus, he can use it to get cash out here.
