Travel to europe on UK spousal visa....
« on: May 06, 2009, 02:36:14 PM »
Hi all,

This may be one of the easiest questions to answer (and maybe one of the dumbest questions asked :P)

My US wife has recently applied for UK spousal visa and my question is, will she be fine to travel to Europe (eg Turkey, Greece etc) once this has (hopefully) been granted...

I am hoping to take her away ona stress relieving break (this visa journey does take it out of you ::))

Many thanks all...

Simon

A UK entry clearance (such as the spousal visa) is only good to enter the UK. The onus is on the individual to ensure s/he satisfies the entry requirements of the countries you want to visit. Having said that, as a US passport holder your wife should be able to visit countries in Europe for a short period of time w/out applying for any other visa beforehand. Shouldn't be hard to find out by googling that country's consulate...

Happy travels!

She'll be fine to travel abroad and re-enter the UK on her spousal visa.  You were really asking about her ability to get back in, right?

Yes, she will be fine to get out of the UK, get in the countries you mentioned and get back in to the UK on her spousal visa.

She will need to purchase a Turkish Entry Visa at the border when entering Turkey since they are not part of the Schengen travel area of Europe where she can just get stamped in for 90 days at a time. Best to check with the US State Department to see what the visa requirements are for each country to be on the safe side: http://travel.state.gov/travel/travel_1744.html.

On a similar note - we are going on holiday to Turkey as well. I checked the visa requirements and it appears to be the same as for UK citizens - i.e. pay £10 upon entry to Turkey, so that should be ok.
My question - when booking the tickets what name do we use for DW, as her passport is in her previous name but it does have her UK visa in with the married name on it.

The fee for US Citizens is $20 USD...her ticket must be purchased in the name that is on her current passport since that is the identity document that she will be presenting to the airline.
