Best Sports Bar in London to watch NFL?
« on: May 07, 2009, 07:39:40 PM »
Hi there,

Anyone know any good spots to catch at least some Sunday/Monday night NFL games during the season in London?  I'm a huge NE Patriots fan and we've been introduced to one place in central london that supposedly plays US sports but I can't remember the name and it wasn't the greatest (prefer normal english pub to gimicky ESPN Zone like haven).  Yes I realize football doesn't start for another 4 months but I want to be prepared! :)

Thanks!

Hi,

I never found one, and wound up getting Sky Sports solely for the NFL.  (This year to avoid the costs we're going to get a Slingbox and hook it up at my parents' house.  Might work for you, too.)

Something to keep in mind is the early games start at 6pm, the late games start at 9pm and the Sunday/Monday night games start at 1am, so finding a place that's going to stay open until 4am on Tuesday morning is going to be tough.

Something else to keep in mind is that the Patriots suck.  Go Cowboys!!!!  :)

good luck,
Carl

I take it you wouldn't like the Sports Cafe near Trafalgar Square then? A mate of mine said The Maple Leaf tends to have American Football from time to time.

Look out for any pubs that say they have Setanta sports - NASN is part of Setanta now so you may be able to persaude them to put your game on (as long as it doesn't clash with an irish Rovers game of course!).

NASN is now ESPN America.  Between that and Sky's broadcasts of the NFL, I'm not sure how many NFL games they'll be broadcasting.  I looked on their website, but couldn't see anything about NFL broadcasts (not to say it's not hidden away someplace on their site).

{edit} Found some TV broadcast info on the NFL-UK website: http://www.nfluk.com/tvschedule.html

NASN (ESPN America as they are now) do not have NFL rights in the UK, it's on Sky Sports. You'll struggle to find "normal English pubs" showing it, particularly if there is football (soccer) on at the same time.

Even if they have Setanta, odds are they won't put it on for you.  I have begged in pubs, as one of few customers, to change the crap old man footy game (I didn't call it that to the server) to American football and NO. Even offered money, but heck no.

Ah that was the place, we checked out Sports Cafe... If that's all there is then we'll have to make do.  I'm surprised there aren't any pubs that are known to show at least the 2 first Sunday games, there are a good number of bars dedicated to EPL/european football here in NYC...

It is likely to be Sports Cafe as your only option.  It is the best there is in terms of coverage.  They will play almost everything.  I've been there for English football, Australian rugby matches, Stanley Cup games...I don't think you will find NFL in a standard English pub.

I think that the difference is that there is a huge market in New York for English/European football because of the various immigrant groups (I am thinking Irish/Italian/Spanish/South American especially).  There isn't a huge market for US football outside of US nationals.

I think this is probably true. I have a friend who is a huge footy fan who always used to love going to bars in NYC to watch games, but she now lives in TN and complains that she hasn't been able to find any bars around that show games. When she asks why, she's usually told there's very limited interest. :(
And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
"Thank you for being a friend!"
