Hey,

I'll be traveling to London this fall and I am on the search for a place to watch American football (namely my beloved Philadelphia Eagles...donn't worry, not a Cheese Head ha). I was just wondering if you have found anything since the last time you posted...thanks!

zac.

I would recommend a subscription to Sky Sports.  That's your best bet, it seems.  ;)

The Sports Bar and Grill just next to Marylebone Station is showing everything. However, if you fancy seeing the final in a bit of luxury...We at the Russell Square Casino are showing the final on our Big screen.

I think you'll be lucky to find anywhere that shows it regularly. Why not try and get into something new like rugby? The six nations starts soon, most pubs in london will show the matches and you may even be able to go see one at Twickenham.

Once you get into it you may even find it's far more interesting.  :-X

Is rugby the one where advertising-covered dudes who look like the heavies in a Guy Richie movie chase a ball around a field in larger and larger groups until they're all in one great big group, whereupon the ball squirts out and they all start chasing it again?    ;)

Lol...ok... ;)

yes, that's the one - the one that has several stages of play (scrum, lineout, ruck, maul etc) each with its own particular tactics, the one where a period of play can last more than a few minutes and not be repetitive, the one where a particular skill set is required for every position within the team and the one which despite it being even more physical than American football the players don't feel the need to wear crash helmets and all over padding.

In short it's a more skillful, more tactical game with many more dimensions to it than American football. I guess thats why it's played all over the world where as American football isn't. Actually, thinking about it,  i guess (apart from the padding) you could same the same about cricket as compared to Rounders..sorry...baseball.....

But most of all...it's the one that you can get into over here if  (:-\\\\ for some reason) your missing American football.

Bit like mexican food - stop whingeing and go and try a curry  ;)

That made me laugh aloud, but this:

is way out of bounds.  Bollocks to you, I say!  ;)

Seriously...?

I challenge you to watch and compare a full game of rugby and a full game of american football, there is NO WAY you can honestly say that American football is more skillful, tactical and with more dimensions to it. The very fact that rugby has more phases and types of play to it means it has to be more tactical for starters...

is way out of bounds.  Bollocks to you, I say!  ;)

for new members unfamiliar with the many ways the word ''bollocks'' can be used camsocato could also have said:

''That's bollocks'' , ''your talking bollocks'', ''bollocks to that'', ''american football is the dogs bollocks'' Now, lets try those together, repeat after me....... ;D

EB, I have watched a full game of rugby, sitting next to a knowledgeable fan of the game who helpfully answered my questions and explained what was going on.  As with just about any game, I can see why people might like it, but that doesn't change the fact that I've been a fan of the NFL for just over 30 years.  I can honestly say that I think the NFL requires more skill, more diverse tactics, and there are more dimensions to it.

But so what?  Did I just change your mind?  Are you, based on my passionate love of the NFL, now going to quit watching rugby and start watching the NFL?  Of course you're not; I wouldn't expect you to.  Which is why if you asked me where's a good sports bar in New York to find rugby on television, I'd tell you where one was rather than tell you to watch the NFL instead.  ;)

Uh-oh how many times have I sat through this debate?

Right.  We all love the games we love for whatever reasons we love them.  Just like with movies or tv shows or books or theater or any other form of entertainment, there's no right or wrong answer.

I'm English and find American Football a far more tactical sport than rugby. As for rugby - it's got to be league rather than union.

I agree but i think your missing my initial point, yes i prefer rugby and yes i think is a better game - that's my opinion. However, if i was living in the states where rugby isn't played or shown as much i would probably try to get into american football. Thats why i also made the mexican food reference - i love curries but if i was in the states and there weren't as many curry houses but perhaps more mexican restaurants then i'd be getting into mexican. When in Rome and all that.

Camsocato, Lets agree to disagree on this one, Tykeman - i agree with you, American Football is more tactical than rugby league, however i was talking about union. ;)

English Bloke, I get the "Love the one you're with philosophy" to sports that you are espousing.  But it is easier said than done.  Like Camoscato, I have loved the NFL and the Cowboys for more than 30 years.  That kind of passion just doesn't go away just because rugby is also fun to watch.

And when you live some place where things are different, and you miss your friends and family AND Mexican food,  being able to watch a little football is a comfort that watching Rugby (or any replacement sport) can't compete with.

I see your point, Rob, and it's interesting that you bring up trying to get into new sports in new countries.  I tried to get into football when I moved to the UK, but without anyone to hang out with and watch games there was no emotional connection to a team, which made it hard to stay interested.  Same goes for rugby and cricket.  Plus, I've been following the Dallas Cowboys since 1978, and I'm not going to let a little thing like the Atlantic Ocean keep me from watching them.

Before you start to think I'm one of those people who never assimilates, I absolutely love chicken Madras.  ;)

Like Camoscato, I have loved the NFL and the Cowboys for more than 30 years.  That kind of passion just doesn't go away....

For me it got stronger.  The fact that I now have to make more of an effort to watch the Cowboys somehow makes it even more important for me to see their games.  I have a borderline-unhealthy number of Dallas Cowboys jerseys, though, so don't use me as an example of rational behavior on this issue.   ;D
