Road Trip
« on: May 09, 2009, 12:16:14 AM »
Hubster and I are thinking about doing a road trip around Devon and Cornwall in July for our Anniversary...Furthest point being Lands End / Penzance...camping and seeing the sights....Mainly coastal...and a little inland..then moving on to the next place.  Does anyone have any recommendations of particular places / sites to visit?  Also if anyone knows of good cheapy campsites in that area, that would be cool too  :)

We're thinking of going camping in Cornwall in August, so if you find any hidden gems, let me know!  Chary recommended this campsite, which I think looks fantastic.  Be sure to take lots of pictures, especially of Land's End!

the only place down there that I know is Croyde which is a chocolate box village with very large beautiful beaches.  Full of surfers.  There are plenty of camp sites there as well.

My son went to Lizzard Point a  couple years ago and he loved it.

i'd certainly reccommend at least one night (pref. a weekend when they have music) at the Blue Bar on Porthtowan beach. Great food, location. atmosphere and sunsets.

Not sure if there is a campsite as its only a small village but i have seen people set up tents on the sand dunes there....

Thank you guys  :D

So far, the plan seems to be as follows:-

Starting off at Brixham for a few days, meeting up with some family who I have not seen in a while, Then off to a campsite between Falmouth & Helston as a base.  Want to do a day at Lizard Point, Lands End and then a visit to The Minack Outdoor Theatre for a Opera evening, and try and see Tall Ships at Falmouth, Seal Sactuary and Flambards....Then moving on to perhaps a base camp at Padstow, with trips to Newquay and the Cyder Farm....and I am stuck on where to go for the final camp before heading home...perhaps Ilfracombe or Bude??  :-\\\\

I'd stop in or around St Agnes.  It's pretty quiet, a couple of pubs and restaurants, and a spectacular walk from the 'town' centre down to the sea and then along the cliffs.  It's probably a good alternative to staying in Newquay, which I think is a bit busy during the season.

The problem is - everywhere looks lovely!  :D  and also trying to incorporate places I have never been to yet myself...so me and the hubbo both experience something new together.  :)

Skip Newquay. It's really not worth the bother.

The Seal Sanctuary is great!

If you want to see the Tall Ships in Falmouth, get there VERY early otherwise you'll be miles out of town and won't be able to see a thing.

Land's End ... meh.

I agree with skipping Newquay - great for a stag do but not much else - there are equally stunning beaches and good surfing elsewhere.

One area i would reccommend is around http://www.mevagissey.net/

This area is beautiful and is usually a little quieter than the rest of Cornwall even in high season. Its also good for visiting the Eden project.

I lived in Newquay for a year. The beaches are spectacular, but there one ones just as good elsewhere. I agree with chary, it's not worth the bother.

I did like Land's End though.
And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
"Thank you for being a friend!"
