You can get the old fashioned kind that require rock salt and ice. I just find that it is a lot of palaver, but you still get nice ice cream.

My arm still hurts from the one we used to use when I was a kid! :P ;D

My parents have one of those!!!!  An old hand crank one!  Crazy!  They also have a automatic crank one.  However they never use them!

My mother collects kitchen gadgets I think.   Though she's gotten better over the years!

I love our Kitchen Aid attachment!  We haven't tried yogurt, but it does great with ice cream and sorbet.  Unfortunately, it does take up a fair amount of space, so probably not an option if you've got a teeny freezer. :-\\\\

Cool! I think that's what I'm going to go for. It's more expensive than I was planning on spending, but when we move I won't have to get rid of it since our Kitchen Aid is from the US.

Ok, so I broke down and bought an ice cream maker, mainly to make frozen yogurt because I haven't been able to find many low/non fat options here. I'm just wondering if the bowl really needs the full 24 hours in the freezer. I bought the Kenwood IM200.

Also, any tips or ideas from those experienced ice cream/froyo makers would be appreciated.  :)

I had a kenwood, but can't remember which one.  (I don't think I have it anymore) When I had it, I was making that easy-yo yogurt every week.  I basically just took the container of yogurt and poured it into the machine.  I like plain froyo and it worked out really well.

I do think it needs 24 hrs to freeze.  But I never tried to do it sooner.

You just poured regular yogurt in the machine, nothing else? I'm going to use the Total 0% Greek yogurt and maybe honey and fruit.

Yes.  Nothing else.  Have you ever tasted plain frozen yogurt?  They do it at Bloomingdales. (I don't know if it's all over the US or not)  It's so good.  It tastes pretty much like that.

Yeah, I've had it at Pinkberry. I like it but I need a little more sweetness. I'm sure I'll end up adding Splenda.  :P  ;)

I'm not a big Pinkberry fan. Overrated, IMO.

Let me know how it comes out.  One thing I am happy about is that we now get Greek yogurt easily in VA.

As I posted on another thread, Heidi Swanson (via David Lebovitz) has the best frozen yoghurt recipe ever.

http://www.101cookbooks.com/archives/a-frozen-yogurt-recipe-to-rival-pinkberrys-recipe.html

I always make it with 2% Fage as the non fat makes it a bit to hard to scoop. It also just that litle bit richer. I like mine with a squeeze of lemon rather than the vanilla.

Mine too!!! Man, I hated that thing! We used to have to take turns doing 100 cranks each. Ugh.

But a friend of mine picked up one of the old-fashioned ice cream makers at an auction for a fiver not too long ago, and she loves it!
