I'm surprised to hear they were all over Texas where you can get actual, you know, Mexican food.

I had a Big Mac today. Brought a tear to my eye. I think it was the acid reflux.

The one I remember was in Uxbridge from about 1993-94.  It makes me nauseated to think of it.  It was replaced by a Wendy's!

There are US AF bases in Ruislip, so I guess it was a good idea at the time.

Well, I didn't say all over Texas, I never went all over that very large state to find out, lol.
(Midnight Blue, intrepidly travelling all of Texas to tirelessly document Taco Bell proliferation!)

I think I said when I wound up in Texas they were "all over the place" and my meaning was in the city I lived in, and yes, sad isn't it? There were as many Taco Bells and Taco Cabanas all over Austin as there were McDonalds and Wendy joints scattered around. But just as there are fast food burger places mixed in among restaurants that will do true, fresh, custom grilled burgers that are a more pure form of the fast food version, there are "proper" Mexican restaurants mixed in with the fast food version such as TB --- "real" Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine restaurants aplenty in fact; both fancy places and also respected small mom-and-pop places run by the folks who know how to do it right.

La Reyna in south Austin is recommended; also Matt's El Rancho, which sounds cheesy but is respected and loved by locals for having the good stuff; Fonda San Miguel in central norht Austin had incredibly good "interior" Mexican which is the real, real deal and quite different form the "Tex" Mex propagated by the fast food places. Incredibly pricey too, however, that place.

I remember the one in London, was it in Picadilly Circus or Leicester Square?  I went in 1996.

Wait, is there still a Wendy's in the UK?  'Cause I've been craving a Junior Bacon Cheeseburger something crazy the last few days.  I don't even LIKE fast food hamburger joints!

The last one, as far as I know, was on Oxford Street, near Bond Street, and closed about 1998/99.   I remember loving their square burgers, and I went veg in '99.  I also remember thinking how clever it was to wrap burgers in foil to keep them hot.  Why does no one else do that?

Amy showed me this a few weeks ago and I cried tears of joy. Since I'm going back to America for a short visit in a week I'm hitting up Taco Bell almost every day I'm there and DF is so jealous he can't see straight.

Also Chipotle is not mexican food just like Taco Bell isn't.

THERE IS NO REAL MEXICAN FOOD IN THIS COUNTRY!! That I have found so far...

Why oh why can't we have Baja Fresh instead?  I miss my Calimex!!
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.

Some of these places look totally yummy! Anybody in London tried any of these yet? I am positively drooling looking at some of the menus.

Mmmm....Baja Fresh...Del Taco...any fake Mexican except Taco Bell...

Actually, my favourite fake Mexican is Taco John's.

We go to nineteen 10 and wahaca at westfield all the time.
I really like Wahaca, their "british steak the mexican way" is out of this world good, my texan boyfriend likes it a lot, but says it's "not really mexican" it's definatelynot tex-mex.
Their frijoles are gorgeous! I could eat a massive bowl full, I also like the free refils on nibbles.

We also went to Bar buritto in Liverpool 1 yesterday and split a steak buritto, it was really good but the extras are outrageous, £1.25 for cheese sauce on your tortilla chips?!
Bar buritto is pretty much Chipotle not quite as good but definitely nice methinks  :)

That would be pretty awesome.  Taco Bell isn't the greatest, but it would be better than nothing.  I'd only worry they'd try to change it a bit to suit English tastes.

This is what I am imagining... curry tacos.  :-X
To me, KFC here really sucks - no biscuits, no mash, no gravy, no corn on the cob, no baked beans, no veg at all, really- just chicken and fries. And they didn't even have the extra crispy chicken!  :( I think I would just be disappointed by a Taco Bell here. I am sure I would give it a try if there was one around, but in the meantime, I will just make my own burritos at home, with my own Tex-Mex seasoning (sans curry!)
I do actually prefer UK McDonald's to US ones, but I miss the sausage biscuits!  :\\\'(
Haven't tried Pizza Hut, Subway, TGI Friday's or anything else... are they really different, as well? (It's too bad they didn't bring Chili's over instead of TGIF!)

I totally agree about the no mashed potatoes at KFC, it really sucks.  I don't even really like gravy, but for some reason I loved the KFC gravy at home.  The KFC by me has corn on the cob, but they don't have butter, so unless you're ordering to take home, it's not worth it to order corn.

There are a few Chili's in the UK.  I haven't tried the one in Belfast yet, but am dying to!
