Can anyone with any experience of living in or near any of these places relate any of their impressions (positive or negative) of the area?

Thanks!

Hi, I live in Farnborough and work in Guildford so I think I have a pretty informed view.

Aldershot - The British Army HQ is in Aldershot. Not the greatest place, I wouldn't live there. Can't think of any pubs/restuarants, but it has a strip club.

Farnham - Nice. Houses are expensives, but not as dear as Guildford. Has nice town centre and reasonable links to London, but takes longer than Guildford. Fair selection of shops, pubs, restuarants with a number of galleries and quite a few housing options.

Guildford - Expensive, but nice. Good transport links to London (35 minutes), Gatwick, and Portsmouth. Nice town centre with a good high street. Lots of pubs and restuarants, some quite good ones. I've been looking for a house in Guildford for almost a year and haven't found anything I can like AND afford.

There are a couple other areas you could consider that are nice such as Fleet and Godalming. Depends on where work is I guess, but house prices in both are lower than Farnham or Guildford.

Thanks -- And looking at your username, are you a librarian? If so, what kind?

Academic. I'm not technically a librarian yet, I'm a senior information assistant and manage the library outside the core 9-5, M-F. I'm going to grad school next year.

If you're in the same field and eying a recently closed job advert at an academic library in the area, well you'd be my boss. If this is the case, feel free to send me a PM and I can tell you all about it.

Good luck with the move, let me know if you need any more information about the local area.
