Susan got taken to a hospital by ambulance on Sunday. I think she went to a mental hospital.

It's the Priory.

'Mental hospital' is not a nice way to put it.

I do feel sorry for SuBo....but I did used to think she was not the full ticket in the first place..and if I can pick that up as a viewer..then it must have been obvious to the cast and crew....I do question their screening process on BGT... >:(

Hahahaha!  Screening process?  I'd imagine the screening process for most reality shows goes like this:

Stage 1: Do you want to be on television?

Stage 2: When you are on television, do the ratings go up?

If you answer yes during Stage 1, congratulations, you're on television.  If after you've been on television you can answer yes during Stage 2, congratulations, you're going to stay on television!

After the massive hype following her first performance, the BGT producers would've wheeled Susan Boyle on stage strapped to a dolly (hand truck) if that's what was needed to get her back on camera.

Yeah, sadly. She looked a bit mad when they were announcing the winners, DH and I both thought something was wrong with her, and then she looked relieved that she DIDN'T win. Poor soul.  :-[

I would add that I think producers also zero in on people who have some sort of vulnerability, quirk, or "issue" that makes them a standout, for better or for worse. If viewers could see that Susan Boyle was a vulnerable person, surely the producers did when picking her to be on the show, knowing she had the potential to drive ratings at some point.

I think you're right, and further, she's a quirky person with talent, so she goes against the convention of the genre, which is the quirky person is not only quirky, but untalented and deluded about it.  So that makes her interesting at first because everything we know about this genre of show tells us she's going to be terrible, and then she's even more interesting because she's not terrible.

I'm sure a grad student in Radio/TV/Film is writing a paper about her even as we speak.  :)
