Bringing over my sugar gliders...?
« on: June 01, 2009, 10:04:05 PM »
So I think I understand the PETS Scheme for my cats... but I also have two sugar gliders and they are well... my kids. :) I can't seem to locate any information on bringing them over too. Any ideas?

It doesn't look like DEFRA has any clear guidelines for them.

Quote
20. What other animals are covered by the Regulation?
A. Domestic rabbits and pet rodents (including guinea pigs, hamsters, rats, mice and gerbils), birds (except certain poultry), ornamental tropical fish, invertebrates (except bees and crustaceans), amphibians and reptiles.

The EU Regulation does not affect animals covered by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) which will remain subject to the provisions of Council Regulation 338/97 on the protection of species of wild fauna and flora.
Q21. What are the rules on the movement of other animals under the Regulation?

A. These rules apply for pet rabbits and rodents. The rules for the movement of other species between EU countries, and into the EU, have not yet been set by the European Commission. To bring these animals into the UK they must meet either national import rules or the general rules for trade in the animal species.

For information on import licences for birds and guidance on the import of invertebrates, amphibians and reptiles please see www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/int-trde/default.htm, or e-mail: iah-imports@defra.gsi.gov.uk

I found Defra to be very helpful and polite by email and phone. Try contacting them directly.

Right on, thank you so much! Should've figured this would be a "phone" fix :)

So I promised that I would keep you all updated on the guidelines on bringing sugar gliders into the UK. Here is the email I received from DEFRA this morning.

"Dear Ms Newman,

Thank you for your email received 7th June 2009 regarding the import of your sugar gliders to the UK from the USA,

Please be advised that your sugar gliders will have to enter into six months of quarantine upon entry into the UK.  An import licence is required (from this Department) for animals entering the UK.  We are unable to issue the licence until we have confirmation from your chosen quarantine premises and carrying agent that they will house and transport your pets on their arrival into the UK.

I have attached a link to our website that provides information relating to approved quarantine premises.  It is vital that you contact your chosen quarantine premises well in advance of travel to book your pet into quarantine and for them to apply for the import licence and arrange transport from the airport for your pets.

http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/quarantine/quarantine/procedures/support-info/map.htm

Please note that all expenses in connection with the landing, transit, quarantine and vaccination of your animal are solely for agreement between you and the quarantine premises and carrying agent concerned. "

Awww :( I can't put my babies into quarantine. I've heard some bad things about quarantine and animals dying... and my gliders are so spoiled. Guess I'll have to have family look after them for the year or so that we are away. How depressing :(

Awwww... that's too bad. I really wouldn't think it would be ok to quarantine them, as they have such a special diet, don't they?  (My friend had some and I think he fed them smoothies and baby food, from what I can remember!) Sorry to hear the sad news, but at least if you leave them with family then you know you have left them in good hands.

yeah, they require such a special amount and type of care. Quarantine would just be too hard on the little guys...  Somehow, we will make this all work tho. I am confident that whatever happens, happens for a reason. :)

Yeah, that stinks that they'd have to go into quarantine.  At least you have family that can take care of them, and you'll only be abroad for a set amount of time. :)
