How to call the US???
« on: July 01, 2004, 02:57:45 PM »
I have been here 2 months and all of my calling cards have run out.  What is the cheapest way to call the US?  I think BT from home is 6p a mintue or something crazy like that?  My old MCI card was 3 cents a minute but I can't get it to recharge from the UK.  Any suggestions?
Thanks. ???

Try OneTel.co.uk. Many people on this site use them and their price is great. Went went from them to BT and have seen significant savings.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

We've been using OneTel for years and it's been great for us.

We're using  Telco - http://www.telcoglobal.com/default.asp - which has a 2p per minute rate to the US. Haven't experienced any problems with the lines or service.

We pay an extra £1 a quarter to BT to have a cheap rate of 3p a minute to the US. You could try a  phonecard, the one I used to use to call Stu was the Eurocity - a £5 card gets you 12 hours. You can actually buy them for less that £5 in some places.

I use a "low-call" number...one of those that you dial a 0845 number, then the number you want to call.  It is super cheap, and costs the same as any other low-call number...its the same idea as the "10-10-9-8-7" numbers in the States.

The number I use is: 0845-244-5445.  When it prompts you, enter: "001" + area code + phone number.  They switch out the number every so often, and when they do, they will tell you the new number to call.

It's 100% legit...I use it to call the family in WA state all the time, and my guy calls me from Scotland when I am in the States.

Good luck!!

Frances

I have a system set up on my phone where I just dial 1457 before my (US) number. It is about 2p a minute with no connection charges. They bill you seperate from your phone bill once a month. I have been very happy with it so far. I have all the info at home. I'm pretty sure they have a website. I will post it tomorrow.

This is the best ... www.call18866.com (go to google 18866) Its 1p a minute to the states for both land and mobiles. I use it all the time, although rarely it wont connect for some reason. You sign up on line and you do all your bills on line with a credit card. You  can look at your bill there too. Also, you can put additional phone numbers on. We put DH's dad on it so he can call both the US and New Zeland for 1p

I also use the NTL international plan. £1.00 a month and 2p a minute for calls to the USA. Its funny, I can call my mother and talk for an hour for less than it costs to call my hubby on his cell for 5 minutes!

Isn't that the sad truth!!  After getting used to the USA mobile rates then picking up with a UK phone, I had some serious sticker-shock!!

Kelly,
I checked out the web site you mentioned...www.call18866.com.  It seems legit but will BT charge me as well?  What phone service do you have?  Are there any other charges other than the 1p/minute?
Thanks.

;D Okay, I know I am responding yet again to my own posting but I tried the 18866 thing and it worked!!!  I called my mom's last night in DC for 11 minutes (yes it was only that long because she had to run) and it only cost me 12p (1p/minute and 1p connection fee)!!!  I am so excited.  I am going to use this plan for all my US calls from now on.
So, if anyone else is interested...go to www.call18866.co.uk to register. Thanks!

I have been using 18866 for a while now, we even have in laws on our account. Last month we had a whopping £6.49 bill. That was for both houses. Its the best we have found. I have had very few problems, lines might be busy sometimes, but other then that its been worth every p. Glad you tried it. ;D
