I've stayed in the Globetrotter Inn in London before and found it to be quite nice. It is in an old listed nursing dorm. It has a bar (with quiz nights & random fun stuff), big communal kitchen, free breakfasts, etc. Overall it was a really nice hostel for the money. The only downside is that the tube stop is Stamford Brook so it is about a 10-15 minute tube ride from Westminster on the District line (though I didn't find this to be a problem).

I'm thinking about getting metal legs. It's a risky operation, but it'll be worth it.

Wake Up London, near Paddington Station. The security guard, Mick, if he is still there, is one of the nicest and most helpful people I have ever met.

I have a friend who stayed the the YHA Hostel in Central London on Bolsover St. about 2 months ago.  I wasn't sure what she would think, because she had never stayed in a hostel before, but she was quite pleased with it.  It is fairly new, and she said it was clean and quiet.
